Would a Barracuda or a Challenger be a good car for a beginner driver?

Hey I had 1 as a teen, loved it.

But that was back in the early 80ds, they're worth to much today.

If he/she is looking for a career in automotive restoration then yes they are.

Welcome to the board Goonie!  Great place here for all kinds of MOPAR people!!   I guess it would depend on the teenager and their driving habits??   Is this for you or one of your children!!    :dontknow:

a Mopar ...yes  A vintage cuda or challenger ? most likely not ....at least until they have some experience. This applies to the average teen, your particular teen may be more mature and responsible than most ...only you know that

I think a nice Duster with a 318 would be perfect car to drive and learn about Mopars

You could hop it up later after some driving experience or trade up to the E-body later

Most teens destroy their first cars but if you can afford it, why not a 'CUDA or Challenger.

Whatever you get, start out with a small engine and big brakes

i agree - a 318 is best - reliable, decent milage, and an A-body would be great as it is smaller and is easier to drive than a B or E body. I love my charger and have had it sence i was 15 but sometimes i wish i had a dart or duster...   it's not easy driving it around town and parking lots made for modern cars.

Never! Young people are too irresponsible to be trusted with such valuable and powerful automobiles. Buy a nice Plymouth Neon as a starter car, and leave the Mopar Muscle to experienced and mature drivers!

Now... time to wait for someone to figure out the gaping hole in this argument.

Oh, yeah, and welcome goonie!

My first car was my '69 Barracuda... wouldn't have traded it for a THING!! Start off with an A-body... then move from there... the E-bodies are bigger!!

First off, welcome to the site.

Second, no.  Unless they have had a few years of experiance, and know the value of the car, then, I'd say get them something else.

Also, will said teenager have to pay for the car by him/herself, because E body parts cost alot of $$$.

An A body was a perfect car for a learner in the 9170s or so as they were compacts. They were also cheap to insure and run. today they would be nowheres near as cheap to run. Most local shops no longer stock parts for them as they are going past 25 out of production. Not many places would even stock fanbelts anymore. and if you prang it, you just don't go to the local junkyard for cheap sheetmetal. and that's for an A body. Make that a B or and E and you're into insurance and parts nightmares. However if the teenager's last name is Gates or Rockefeller - no problem.

Most teens destroy their first cars

 :iagree:

Also an inexperianced driver can easily kill themselves in a high performance car trying to show off to friends.

definitely YES.
My 16 year old is driving a 440 cuda. he also has a 4 cyl escort.
He respects the cuda so much that he drives it more careful than than the escort.
He does not want to wreck it so he does not abuse it. I think it has taught him a lot about respect for the muscle cars.
Yeah he has fun in it and burns the crap out of the tires, but overall really wants to treat it well and make sure not to wreck it. He really learned to appreciate muscle and rare cars. I am very proud of him for it.

On the other hand, his older brother started with junk cavalier, had no respect for it, got tons of speeding tickets ended up wrecking it.
His mother had said, just get him a 4 cyl car and he wont get in trouble, yeah right.

The one driving the 440 drives better and more careful than the one driving the junk 4 cyl car ever did.
It has also been an awesome bonding tool for father and son.
