definitely YES.
My 16 year old is driving a 440 cuda. he also has a 4 cyl escort.
He respects the cuda so much that he drives it more careful than than the escort.
He does not want to wreck it so he does not abuse it. I think it has taught him a lot about respect for the muscle cars.
Yeah he has fun in it and burns the crap out of the tires, but overall really wants to treat it well and make sure not to wreck it. He really learned to appreciate muscle and rare cars. I am very proud of him for it.

On the other hand, his older brother started with junk cavalier, had no respect for it, got tons of speeding tickets ended up wrecking it.
His mother had said, just get him a 4 cyl car and he wont get in trouble, yeah right.

The one driving the 440 drives better and more careful than the one driving the junk 4 cyl car ever did.
It has also been an awesome bonding tool for father and son.
Thats good for your son but boys will be bys and occasions will pop up when his mates etc tell him, "Come on man light her up, yeeah! drop a patch etc" he will do it, did you? YES.

It's the Fathers call, I wouldn't rest at night knowing my son/daughter was riding around aina 400hp Big Block.

I say if the kid can handle 400 HP then it doesn't matter...you can smoke the tires and still not be wreckless its when you get into doing the power slides and not knowing when you've broght the ass end around to far..i say if he knows the limits of the car then it doesn't matter...but like some other people have stated you could always start him out in an Abod..plus they are cheaper

i agree with what CP and dodgefreak said

 it's the person.

but to help in the matter, get one that YOU have to work on....busted knuckles, blood shed, time to save to get parts...that way you have more respect for it when it's road ready...

I am twenty right now and got my 2 E bodies, but then again neither of them are road worthy at least not until the summer.  I think now to get an E body that is in good shape for a daily driver you probably are going to pay close to 10,000 and do you really want to buy your teenager a 10,000 car for their first one.  When I bought my first car I had to buy the car and my parents said they would pay the insurance.  All I had at the time was 1000 dollars.  So I went on my search and came up with a 69 dart, 4 door, 170, 3 spd.  Not the prettiest car but it taught me a lot.  It showed me how to work on cars and how to drive conservately.  In retrospect I should have done this.  I say if you have the money and the room buy your teenager a cool 6 or 4 cyl car like a camaro or a mustang for cheep.  I just got a 4 cyl, 4 spd mustang for 500 that doesnt need much work.  Then find a mopar project car and go to town on that.  Then they restore and build the car with their own hands they will have a great respect and appreciation for the car.

Just my 2 cents

Matt
Too many projects and nothing gets done.

My son does have a lot of work, sweat and tears in this car. Those of you who saw the threads the last 2 years saw him and his buddies build a lot of this car. Even so far as to primer it ready for paint and put 3 different engines in and out in and out.
I am sure that has a lot to do with his respect for the car.
And, we only paid $3000 for the car 2 years ago as a complete running 318 car.
By doing ALL the work ourselves, we have $8000 in it now as a sassy grass green, 440, full race 727, 3:91 sure grip, Hurst ratchet shifter, comp cams .525 lift cam, billboards, wing, new interior, frame connectors, side exhaust, rally hood. Best investment I ever made in father/son time.
Buy your teen a muscle car? DEFINITELY, but buy one that wont break the family money wise and make sure its one that turns them on cause its a lot of hard work and time spent, then let them work on it and do it their way.

Does he burn the tires? yeah. We live in a very small town, so nothing goes unnoticed.
All the cops (3 of them) know where this car lives.
One night a cop knocks on the door, when I answer, he asks "do you know where your son is in that piece of crap green car?" I know he,s a gear head deep inside.
I said, he's out cruising with his friends. The cop says: "yeah, I know I tried to pull him over and he eluded me". I had to give him some crap, so I says: how can you loose a bright green cuda in this small town, you can hear the exhaust 5 blocks away. He kinda smiled an said: "well some traffice got in the way" "I did not see him doing anything wrong, just wanted to talk to him and tell him to make sure and keep it safe" "so when he comes home, tell him I want to talk to him". I agreed totally, told him to scare him good. My son (16 years old at the time) drove the cuda down to the police station the next day on his own to talk to that officer. Pretty mature I would say.  Honest to God true story.

something to drive while working on E-body with dad is the way to go. I like to learn from my and others' mistakes.

when I teach my son to hunt it will be with a .22 not my sniper rifle.   start slow,  16  +  rocket = ?
Why are the only other cars on the road all in my rear view mirror?  Oh yeah cause I got a 440/6 pack

Thank you GOD for the "Go Fast Division"

:grinyes:  That's what I have been doing since I was 17....Bought the car then and now I'm taking the time getting all the pieces I needed to complete the restoration.  Before it leaves the driveway, I'll be insuring it for $16,000. just to make sure if anything were to happen, I'll be taken care of.  It's all about respecting these cars; you'll be entering into what I like to call an elite class of car enthusiasts.  E-body people are the best kind out there!!!

This is my first post on this forum and I figured my story might help you out. I am 18 right now, and when I was 15 I inherited the challenger I'm currently restoring. It was my Dads car since 77 and he stopped driving it in 86 and it just sat there for 15 years, so I had to work hard to get her running(not to mention the money). The Challenger is an R/T SE 383 with a Cam, headers, exhaust, intake, carb and probably has over 350hp. I was 16 when I finally got the car running and I didnt even know how to drive a manual, let alone a 350hp car, so it was a learning experience to say the least(thankgod Im a fast learner). It took me almost all of my money, time, and patience to get her running and I learned a lot along the way and thats why I respect my car so much. I think you should get a project car for your teenager(if deserving), so they know how hard and expensive it is to get them running and why they shouldnt abuse the car. Now if your teenager is a knucklehead, then get him a ricer and buy yourself something nice.
For reference.......heres what I was driving when I was 16  :grinyes: http://www.geocities.com/killer_mopar/Pics/D.JPG and heres where I am now......  http://www.geocities.com/killer_mopar/Pics/C.JPG

Welcome to the site.  Teens like that are the exception, instead of the rule.  Sad, but true.  Most teens, (including me) tear the **** out of their first car.  I say, get him a nice Dart project.  Let him work on it, while driving a beater for school and work.

Welcome Killer_Mopar, that's true to the point. I speak from experience too. My dad bought a brand new 68 Roadrunner when I was a sophmore in HS and it was a big mistake. The reason it was a mistake, it wasn't mine and I beat the living tar out of it and drove it like I was at NASCAR. (lucky to live through all of it) Seriously, I believe if they have a car like Killer_Mopar, it gives them something to work on and respect and take care of. I had many cars that I didn't drive nearly as hard as the RR and they were my own that I fixed up and had to keep running. There is a lot to be said having your own car to take care of and pay for when you break it! Also a lot to be said abouit good parenting and teaching and working together on the car.
BTW, your teenagers can kill themselfs in just about any car they are driving.
Nice car K_M!!

Hi everyone.
I appreciate all of your comments and words of advice. And as you may have guessed, I am a teenager and currently looking for a car, and I'm in love the the classic American Muscle cars. It would be a dream to start out with a Barraduca or a Challenger that both my Dad and I could work on. I would love to pursue a career in automotive restoration or car customizing but I still have a LOT to learn. I want a car that at least runs and won't break down on me before I get to work....   Now all I have to do is find a car under $10,000  that has a small engine  and someone that could help us with the mechanics part (because my Dad is more of an electronics engineer and a carpenter than a mechanic).
