I think I have a problem, how big I don't know
« on: August 07, 2012 - 12:34:30 PM »
727 Transmision with 83/4 rear 4:10 gears less than 5000 on whole drive line, all new.  problem is I can turn the drive shaft when the car is in Park.  When I drive down the road there is a growling noise coming from the rear, can't be good..

Is this a problem?

groewling is no good , could be just an adjustment to the linkage to get the park rod to lock

At what speed do you hear the growling?  and is it on acceleration or deceleration?

Growling is never good.  Check the pinion nut to see if it has backed off some.

Growls running down the highway and cruising around town.  Power on no growl.  Vibration at highway speed at 3500-4000 rpm. 4:10's. I'll check the pnion nut tonight and will ry to find somewhere to take it and have it looked at.

so the coast side of the gear set is off or pinion could be loose but they torque to 250 ft lbs + so I doubt it willbe loose , any warranty on the set up of the gears ?

Don't I feel dumb but the problem is fixed...  turned out to be a wheel bearing in the front right wheel.  I had a buddy ride with me to see what he thought and in the passenger seat he felt the grind in the floor pan and we found it to be the front end.  I felt in in the center console thinking it was the rear end.

thanks for your input, $35 later its fixed....

problem is I can turn the drive shaft when the car is in Park.

Glad the growling is gone.

But why does the driveshaft turn in park?  does this tranny have a parking pawl that has a tooth?  If so, maybe the tooth is broken?  If thedriveshaft can turn in park, will the car move if park on a hill?

You said the grinding noise was coming from the rear, but I'm glad it was a cheap fix anyway.

But why does the driveshaft turn in park?
If it does you still have a problem.
