Power steering pump removal & rebuild
« on: August 10, 2012 - 10:16:12 PM »
With a power steering pump that has been leaking pretty badly (is bone dry within a week of filling), it's time for a rebuild.

I decided to have a crack at it myself, and have a rebuild kit in hand.

Just want to grab some advice and see if there's any kind of process I should take removing the pump form the car (things to not forget) etc, before I start? Anything else I should consider when taking the pump apart etc?

I'll update this thread with pics and most likely 1057 questions as I go.

It's very easy once you get the pulley off. Then the pump off from the housing.

Likely you'll need some snap ring pliers.
Just like re-building a carb. Stay organized, Lay out the old parts, match and reverse to install.
Contact gears, cover with a thin coat of Vaseline.

I built my Federal and it took about an hour. Was very happy how it came out.

Cheers Mike.

Just got the pulley off. Now I'm trying to figure out how to separate the pump from the reservoir, as I don't have a vice to hold it down.

Any thoughts?

Mine was held in by a big O ring.

I gently pried it off using screw drivers. Kinda like opening a can but opening it up so it all comes off even. Alternating my pry's and it popped.

Yeah I just gave it a few very light taps around the edges with my socket wrench and it came off. Nice and easy.   :2thumbs:

Thought I'd post some follow ups. This isn't a hard job, but for the inexperienced, everything underneath the hood of a car can look a little daunting.

Firstly, not sure how others do it, but I found it much easier to remove the pump with the brackets attached. There are 4 nuts connecting the pump to the brackets, but only 2 mounting the brackets to the motor. The bracket bolts offer much easier access.

Loosen the 2 bracket/motor bolts which will allow you to remove the belt from the pulley. Undo the 2 hoses from the rear. Completely remove the 2 bracket/motor bolts.

Remove the brackets from the pump.

Undo the nut in front of the pulley, then use a pulley puller to get it off. I could only find this 3 jaw gear puller at my local auto parts store, but it did the trick.

Remove the 2 studs and the pressure union, flow valve & valve spring from the rear of the pump.

Hold the pump housing and slightly tap around the rim of the reservoir to separate the 2.

To remove the end cover, you need to remove the retaining ring. I forgot to get photo's of this but this should do. There's a small access hole. Insert something through the access hole (I used a hole punch), to push the retainer ring out, then slide a flathead screwdriver behind it to wedge it out.

There's a spring behind the cover which should partially pop it out once the retainer ring is removed.

Remove the pressure plate, dowels and cam ring, then taps the shaft out which will also pop the rotor & plate out.

Flip the housing over and pop out the shaft bushing with a screw-driver.

... and that's as far as I've gotten. I threw some paint stripper on the outside of the housings so I can give them a new coat of pain before putting everything back together. I didn't have any black paint on hand, so I have to wait until tomorrow before I can get it finished.

That will look great back under the hood once it's cleaned up and painted.   :2thumbs:

Nice work on the tutorial.  This will help me out some day.

Thanks!

Great write up.

I was going to rebuild mine......bought the rebuild kit, dissassembled the pump, cam ring was broke in half. Reassembled the pump, back to parts store, bought a new one. No leaks now though.

Only a small update at the moment. Have given the pump housing & reservoir a few coats of satin black, but before I continued I decided to strip the paint form the brackets as well. Should give it a tidier look once back on the car.

Few tiny scratches still visible but looks 1000x better than the flaky crap that was on there.

Threw some paint stripper on the brackets and the hit them with a grinding disc before a few licks of paint. Came up a treat

About to start putting everything back together now. hopefully I don't screw it up.

Bracket all pretty ready for paint.

Here's the kit and kit number for the Saginaw pump. I have no idea what that cylinder is for?

First thing was to put in the shaft bushing. I used a socket to hammer down and keep it even.

Then put the dowels in and pushed the shaft and rotor in place.

Followed by the cam ring and positioning the vanes. You also need to put in the 2 interior O-rings now, before the seal plate.

Next goes the pressure plate, spring then end cap and retainer ring.

Be sure to replace the final 4 o-rings before putting the pump back into the reservoir.

To put the reservoir back on you need to place it down onto the pump housing. If you turn the housing upside down (or even sideways) the 3 o-rings will fall out. You won't be able to simply press it down though. Once you've got it as far as it will go, insert the 2 threaded studs, and as you tighten them, it will close the the pump & reservoir together.

The insert the valve spring and vale, then screw the valve union in. Don't forget the o-ring on the union.

Put on the pulley, screw the nut down. That's it. Throw on the brackets, and put it back in the car. Attach the hoses, fill it with power steering fluid - then you're good to go!

Took it for a drive. Nothing fell off or blew up. haha. Job done.

Thanks for the help and kind words.

Good job!
That cylinder is a bushing that the shaft rides on. You can see it in the picture when you first painted the housing and pump?
