Argent Silver Paint Alternative?
« on: August 14, 2012 - 11:49:54 AM »
Greetings,

We used to sell an Argent Silver paint in an aerosol can that was a match of the argent silver found on classic mopars. We discontinued it a while ago, but have considered bringing it back again. I was curious if any of you guys and gals had a hard time finding a matching paint, or what you normally suggest to other forum members with that question of "where" to get it. I know of one supplier that is out there, but wasn't sure if there was a "its close enough" type store-bought paint.

Thanks in advance!

-Matt/EW

Krylon makes a textured paint that a lot of people like better then the TA paint that is available.  It has more metal flake in it I think.

The most correct argent available to the masses is going to be the very expensive stuff sold by Rodger Gibson Restorations.  That paint is sprayed through a gun.  The Krylon paint is still supposed to be the next best thing followed by the TA paint.

Right now I have a mixture of the TA light and dark argent on my car.  It's what the painter had available.  Looking at it from an angle, it looks good.  Standing back away from the car though, it looks too light.  If you end up coming out with a product that is darker (like the Krylon graphite Textured shimmer #2521 or the Krylon Silver Textured shimmer #2522) I'll be the ginny pig.

I've got a sprayout of both the TA light and dark argents I could compare it to.

OEM Paints has excellent paint. The shaker argent paint they sell is dead on.The other argents they have are great also.Paddock did sell their products. You can buy direct but it is a 3 can minimum. They are not cheap but the colors are perfect imo. They sell a complete line of argents.

I have rattle cans of TA silver and dark. I think the silver is slightly too light after comparing mine to some good restorations, but I think it will darken just a bit with a clearcoat on it (which I dont have) from what Ive heard.

It seems like some folks are restoring their Gran Coupes and using the light argent on the tail panel.

I used EW argent on my Gran Coupe.  Still have 4 cans.
I sprayed over the argent on my grill with one  light coat of clear coat it didn't darken it up.
The grille was not meant to be shiny or bright..........
I wish Eastwood would bring back the  silver Texture paint for the rear panel......... Why did they drop it Matt?

I spoke with Scott harms on this subject on the phone a few months ago.
He told me that there are 2 sources that have the original paint. Neither one will sell the paint outright. They made a pact sworn not to sell it but to offer it as a spray service. Very expensive quote I received!

The original formula had Mica in it. That's what gave it the right glistening effect.
I have an aged NOS 71' Grille and I can tell you I've seen numerous attempts at car shows to duplicate it and none are an exact match.

I agree with Burdar that Roger Gibson Restorations is going to be the closest match to please most buyers.

I had some of the eastwood stuff, but located the Mopar released Argent Wheel paint part number P4529876 it looks just like the 70 argent but would require underpaint texturing. It woud be fantastic if Eastwood would release the argent again and also offer pint and quart option for self gun spraying.

I'm talking to a paint company on coming up with a correct paint mixture that will have Mica in it.

I feel confident that the OEM paint can be reproduced with the same exact look, durability, and adhesion that the factory had from their supplier at the time.

my body guy sprayed the back panel with the eastwood argent silver but it came out way too light for my '72. so when we resprayed it,
we did some test panels first. we went with a blend of TA dark argent and eastwood's light argent.  the best was spraying the dark first,
then dusting the light over it. here's some before and after shots. is it noticeable?
