1970 Barracuda 6.1/TR6060 6 speed build
« on: August 14, 2012 - 03:08:32 PM »
I originally started out with a 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe that I bought off Craigslist in 2008. I did not get the original engine or fender tag so after several false starts, I finally decided on a 6.1/6 speed build. Since I originally posted on this car so long ago and the intent of the build has changed, I decided to start a new thread. Here is how it looked when I got it:

It looked solid at first but then I started cutting. First I cut out the front floor pans, but then I didn't like the rear floor pans so I cut them out. Then the trunk floor didn't look good so I cut it out. Then I cut off the quarter panels, tail panel and dutchman's panel. The last several pictures are how it looked when I took it to the blaster's.

I had the whole car blasted with aluminum oxide for $200. I picked the car up from the blaster's at 4pm and got home about 5pm. Since I didn't want the bare metal exposed for long, I fired up the compressor, blew all the aluminum oxide out of the gaps/framerails, then I pulled the car in the shop and started priming. I finally finished at about 3am and fell into bed at about 3:30am. My second baby (at the time) cried alot that night so it was ROUGH getting up for work the next morning but it felt really good to see the car go from rusty to clean metal to epoxy primed in about 12 hours.

As soon as it was primed I sent it to a buddy's shop where it sat for a year and a half. Originally he was just going to replace the sheetmetal I cut off, but he was busy with his fulltime job and other fabrication work, which actually worked out well since I again changed my mind on what I wanted to do. The frame rails turned out to pitted and pinholed so I decided to have Matt put in custom frame rails from tip to tail. The new rails are fabricated from scratch and rise up and over the axle to allow more travel and allow the rear suspension to be tucked up inside the car.

The front floorpan is Sherman, but all other sheetmetal is AMD and I have been impressed with AMD (Thanks Jeff!) Here

I bought a wrecked 2010 Challenger SRT8 from the auction pool as a donor car. Before you roast me too bad for using this car, the damage was much worse than it looked. It was involved in high speed collision on I-70 that bent the frame rails past the firewall and buckled/split the cabin floor. The impact broke both motor mounts, bent the exhaust, and broke the 4 ring shifter mounting tabs. It was a 6 speed car, so I am using the engine, transmission, and pedals in my Barracuda. I also used the interior from this car in my black 2010 Challenger SRT8 that I bought from the insurance pool as a theft recovery. I sold the shell as a race car/sheetmetal donor and sold a few other little parts to recoup some money

Looking at this short post, it looks like I am making fast progress but this has all happened over the last 4 years and I am just catching up on pictures.

The engine is fine out of the red Challenger. In the wreck the driver of the Challenger crossed throught the median and the oncoming vehicle hit it at a 45 degree angle; the brunt of the impact was taken on the inside of the driver's rail and bent that rail OUT at a 90 degree angle, without impacting the engine. I really only bought the black challenger (and then the red) because the Cuda was taking so long and I really wanted a cool Mopar to drive and enjoy in the meantime.

I am using the Reilly Motorsport front K member. After adding up the costs of refinishing and rebuilding all my front end suspension and steering components, it just made more sense for me to buy the RMS. Along with the weight savings, newfound space (for steering and exhaust), and the drivability I am happy with the RMS system. The rear suspension will be a 2 link with panhard bar, torque arm, and air ride.

Yeah, that black chally definitely looks sweet.

Can't wait to see the progress.

The rear frame rails are now being welded. The stock rear frame rails angled to the rear corners of the car which limited rear wheel well size. To remedy this, the rear frame rails now travel straight back while paralleling the wheel wells, then they make they make the turn to the corners where they mount/attach in the same location on the rear bumper support.
