modifying the seat back for more angle
« on: August 20, 2012 - 05:15:58 PM »
Has anyone done this?  I like my seat angled back more then what the stock seat is set at.  Is it possible to modify the seat back so it angles back a little farther in the upright possition?  I'm not talking about adding a spacer up front to angle the entire seat but just angling the back a little more.  I feel like I'm sitting at a 90 degree angle.

I havn't even looked at the inner workings of the seats yet so I have no idea what's possible and what isn't.  I just thought that when the seats are apart being recovered, that would be the time to modify something.

Have you considered a 6-way seat track? That way you can drop the back down if you wish.

I often do this , first there is a spacer for the seat back it can be screwed down to angle the seat back more , then I use spacers under the front of the seat to tip it back , sure makes for more comfortable position

The way I understand it is that the 6-way feature moves the front of the seat bottom up/down and the back of the seat bottom up/down.  It does nothing with the angle of the seat back in relationship to the seat bottom.  Even if the entire seat were angled back, my back and my legs would be at the same 90 degree angle to eachother.  That's uncomfortable.

I'll look for a spacer back there.  Hopefully there is one in a 73 seat.  I thought there might be a metal stop of some kind that would need to be cut and welded in a different location.

The 73/74 seats have "posts or studs" that are a permanent piece of the lower frame. I
didn't see any way to relocate these. And they are what the upper seat rests against when
in the seat back position. If you find a way let me know. It sure would be nice to change the angle.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I looked at the drivers seat quickly last night.  That's what I saw too.  It would be nice if those studs were welded to a bracket that bolted to the seat frame.  That way there could be some adjustment.

Would love to see what someone comes up with.

I swapped em.  Put in buckets from a Supra. See through headrest, multi-chamber lumber, tip, tilt, recline, thigh support, deep bolsters for side support. Only cost me $30 for the pair from the salvage yard.

On my 74 seats, I used an angle grinder and cut an indentation into the 2 arms that come from the upper seat and they bolt to the lower seat. About a 3/8" deep "half moon" shaped cuts into each arm where they hit those 2 posts from the lower seat. I got sick of the seating position too, and didnt think it would do much, but actually those small gouges make a big difference. Im guessin it moved the upper seat back about 10 degrees or so, and Im super happy with the way you sit in them now.

So you modified something in the seat back...not those two pins in the seat bottom?  You didn't take a picture of the modification did you?

This is my complaint from driving my dads 74 Barracuda and then my 6-way in the Challenger. You are right that it doesn't change the base to the back angle, but you would be surprised at how comfortable it is even when your hips match the same back angle. When the whole seat sets back, it bends your legs more, which makes it different and much nicer. I would simply try the whole spacer under base thing. You can find thick spacers here and there, I got some out of 70's truck seats that I need to use in order to "level" my seats side to side.

  Great idea!  I seem to be wrapping my knee's around the steering column and my head hits the roof. I'm only 6'1"  The only concern is with tilting the seat back is less room for my kids out back , but they won't fit back there for much longer anyhow.  :grinno:

I'm 6'1" to 6'2" as well but I don't feel like the steering wheel is in the way like others have said.  I'll definately try the spacers in front before modifying anything.  Maybe that will do more than what I think it will.  I think I have some 1/2" aluminum spacers here somewhere to try.

Did these cars come without spacers from the factory? I ask as I was missing a few and made some out of aluminum. I could take them out or the rear ones and see how that feels? I was just wondering if they served a purpose , like spreading the load so the floor doesn't crack or something? :dunno:
