Saving My Original Plates
« on: August 23, 2012 - 11:42:04 PM »
With all the planning and packing for the move to Oregon, I find in the mail a renewal notice from Calif. DMV for the Dodge. Another reminder of Another small detail that needs to be taken care of.

Me and the Challenger were both born (and raised hell) here and we managed to keep our licenses. She still has the old 3 digit and numerals format along with the 1970 year tag, although mine landed a "Needs Corrective Lens" designation. :smokin:

Anyways, I would really like to keep it original and it maybe possible with some creativity. We Still own our property in Ca so hopefully that works for a least the next couple of years.

Very cool!  8)
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Definitely try to keep that plate!

Are you going to open a p.o. box so the dmv has somewhere to send your information in California?

I thought that since we are renting out our Calif. house I'll ask them to forward it to me next year.

Only problems I can foresee is once I get an Oregon License If pulled over, the Officer may have a problem with the Challengers Calif. registration and the addresses not matching. That and insurance company policy conflicts. :clueless:

I would register the car in Oregon and keep the CA. tags. with the car if you relocate back to CA.
I heard that you can sell the CA car with the tags since they are original to the car.
Look into registering the tags as historic.
Historic tags are cheaper. You can register them as historic and still keep the original tag.

What is your cars production date?

I've never seen a CA. 70' Cuda or Challenger with Original "Black" plates.

It would've had to been a very early production date to slip by.
I suspect the cutoff date was somewhere around Feb 69' to April 69' at the very latest.

That's what I was thinking about the black and yellow plates. I bought some yellow/blue plates for my 70 and 1969 is the cutoff for year of manufacture plates to be able to reassign them back to your car I called and went to the DMV no luck. So if you switch it Oregon plates and come back I doubt they will let you re register it with those plates. If you end up needing a ca address pm me and you can use mine to keep it as long as you want.

You could get Black and Yellow plates on early 70 cars.  I have seen a few.

My late 70, came with blue/yellow plates.

One thing you can do here in Oregon is reg with special purpose tags, one time fee, no renewal. Purchase the SP plates from DMV which are yellow with blue numbers or find period correct Oregon plates on Ebay (blue w/yellow numbers) and get a permanent tag. Either way no more paying to renew tags! Also with the permanent plates they only require the rear plate.

Good to know thanks! If they force me into it, that would be the best option. I have a long story and plenty of excuses ready if ever pulled over.

As for the black plates they actually were blue and yellow. I thought black went better with the car especially the grill.  :misbehaving: Mine was originally sold in October of 69. Hard to say if they would ever be questioned being so close to the changeover. So far so good.

Trailering her up next week and hope to get some driving in before winter sets in. I might not be in the mood after 4-20 hour round trips to Medford though. :eek4:
