Tie Down Points for Trailering the Challenger
« on: August 29, 2012 - 11:14:31 AM »
We have a 10 hour drive (some of it thru mountains) and I'm not sure of the best way to secure the front end to the car trailer? The sway bar looks easy but maybe not strong enough?

Thanks Burdar if it mere mine yes however we're borrowing the trailer and I can't really modify it much so tire straps might not work.

What part of the K frame? Does the brake line on the rear axle cause a problem for looping a strap around it?

After responding, I searched around for some other posts on this subject.  It seems like all the posts involved towing race cars and not show cars.  Most people towing race cars use axle straps on the rear.  Those will loop around the front side so they shouldn't come close to the brake lines.  A lot of people said they ran a strap around the K-member or around the LCA's.  I wouldn't do this on a show car though.  You'd ruin the painted parts in a hurry.  That's why I suggested tire straps.

I think I'm going to PM Dave Walden and see what he uses.  The OE guys aren't going to use something that would destroy any of their hard work.

That would be great.  I restored the LCA's and axle housing recently and quite sure a strap would mar over 600 miles. The K-member is still rough so anything goes.

i use these on the front for my cars. got them from northern tool.

when these straps won't work, i'll use axle straps through the lower control arms.

Dave PM'd back and said he uses 4 of those tire straps.  He also used tire covers so the strap doesn't damage anything.

I like the idea. Is it possible to run the anchors as-cue to the side?

This is what we have to work with...

Normally I think you mount D rings to the floor.  Since it's not your trailer you're kind of stuck.

Maybe you can just use some axle straps and insulate the contact areas with thick towels?

I wrap a strap each around the lower control arms and pull straight forward and attached to a cross member on the trailer. These are fixed length straps that are equal in length.

On the rear I will hook into the front leaf spring hanger area and attach at the oppostie side of the trailer at the rear crossmember to create a side and rear pull. So the two rear straps are X'd. These two straps are adjustable in length to tighten everything down.

Once car is tight with straps,  hit the e-brake and/or put in gear/park.

What kind of straps and/or hooks do you have on those straps to work with? Look like you could hook to the K frame or control arms and pull forward to the front most cross member, if your straps have hooks.

The trailers owner said it's ok to put a few lag bolts in the wood floor for a 4x4 wood stop front and back. I also thought to screw down 2x's outside each tire to keep it from shifting sideways. Maybe overkill but I don't want to worry all the way there.

I'm looking at these right now.  Thought to loop a chain into each stake bed pocket and hook the hard steel end to that, then use the strap loop end to the car with a towel or tough fabric for protection. The loop is adjustable in size and has a sleeve for the contact area. Also have access to-two tow straps for extra insurance.

Are those the pieces that incorperate the axle straps with the rathet mechanism?  I just read an old post on Moparts about problems with those.  It seems that the D ring can fray the strap.  I think it would be safer to just buy the axle straps seperate from the ratched mechanism.

I wouldent attach anything to the wooden deck on a trailer much less a car you care about.  :22yikes: i would only anchor it to the steel frame or an under-brace.

I suggest you get axle or wrap straps with a sleeve like the ones here http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/80124/10002/-1?parentProductId=
that way the strap is protected and so is the car, looping the corner of the K frame is probably the best place on the front end.

good luck
