Best "Stealthy" Small Block 4 BBL Intake
« on: August 29, 2012 - 04:49:58 PM »
I'm going to see how much performance I can squeeze out of the 73 Barracuda's 318 before deciding for good whether to keep it 'stock' or not.  So first I'd like to swap the 2 BBL for a 4 BBL, preferably a 73 650 TQ  again for that stock look.  I was leaning towards an LD4B but that doesn't mate to the spreadbore TQ without modding.  So as far as I can find my choices are either an Edelbrock 318/360 Performer or a Weiand Action Plus.  Both work with the TQ, I believe the Weiand is a little taller & maybe supports a little more performance than the Ede.  The one thing that bugs me about the Performer is the dual pattern for the water neck which kills the 'stock' look for me.  Has anyone ground off the extra pad or found a way to hide it?  Right now the 318 is a fairly stock rebuild, but it does sound like it might have a mild cam in it along with a decent dual exhaust.  I know with the 2 BBL it runs out of power at a fairly low RPM now.  I'm even going to pick up a stock 2 bbl aircleaner I can cut on to make a 4 bbl size opening on the bottom.  Any advice on how to do this would be appreciated as well.  So what have you used or seen used for a stock looking install?

Thanks in advance, Jim

IMO the LD4B would be the best intake without swapping heads you can look at the Holley Avenger 570 I need to look & see if Proform has a similar carb in that size there was some 318 4 b cars built in the mid to late 80s in Caravelles etc so you might find a carb & intake that way too

I guess I could paint the LD4B, but it would still look non-stock up close.   I've thought about just leaving it natural and say its part of a 'Day 2' restoration.  I was wanting to use a TQ but that's not an option with the LD4B.

Thanks, jim

My old 318 had a Weiand Stealth intake.

Worked great and looked stock.

I came across the Weiand intake in my searchs and seems like a lot of people said they are great on the 318.  That I can tell from the pictures it would look very stock painted and maybe with the logo ground off.  Thanks for the recommendation, its good to know somebody here agrees they're a great choice for a 318!

A little more $$ than the Weiand but very stock looking, I'll check it out, thanks!

Chryco, I have a chance to pick up a great deal on this Lunati Cam Kit: 00043LK

Part Number  LUN-00043LK
UPC  090127456378

Cam Style  Hydraulic flat tappet
Basic Operating RPM Range  2,000-5,500
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift  230
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift  230
Duration at 050 inch Lift  230 int./230 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration  292
Advertised Exhaust Duration  292
Advertised Duration  292 int./292 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio  0.480 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio  0.480 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio  0.480 int./0.480 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees)  109
Computer-Controlled Compatible  No
Lifters Included  Yes
Lifter Style  Hydraulic flat tappet

Would this work well in a warmed over 318 with better pistons & heads (or head work)?  I'd like to stay with exhaust manifolds but could go for better flowing ones than the stock 318's if that would help.  I would probably go to a steeper rear gear and higher stall converter to help get it up to the rpm range.  What do you think?

Thanks, Jim

I would not recommend that cam 292 ad duration or 230 @ .050 & only .480 lift , the powerband is 2200 -5500
 by comparison the VooDoo 60402 has less duration Ad 262/268 or 220/226 @ .050 with .475 / .494 lift with a powerband 1500-5700 rpm
the VooDoo with build more compression as well giving more torque in the mid-range this will aslo work better with manifolds as it has a 112* CL
overall far better suited to what you want .

If you ever decide to go back into engine building let me know!  I really appreciate the expert advice and I know enough to know that cam choice can make or break an engine combo.  I just checked it out at Summit and the description even mentions good vacuum which I forgot to include since the Barracuda has power brakes.  It looks like the perfect choice!

Thanks again, Jim

Stock 318 ex manifolds suck.

I'd seriously look into some headers.   For small block, get some quality Doug's or TTIs or Doug Thorleys.  Fits the best, but true, a bit $$$.

I don't disagree, but I'm thinking about a 'stealth' performance build.  If I go with headers I might as well go all out, at least that's my thinking right now.   I could go with 340 or TA/AAR style exhaust manifolds which will look more 'stock' than headers, but at some point its not stock anymore so what's the point.  With modern Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers all putting out 400+ HP, I don't want my muscle car era Barracuda to finish a distant second.  Love your "more cow bell" avatar, one of the best SNL skits ever.

Or use the Magnum exhaust manifolds , they flow very well .
I am not sure what my future holds right now ,the only thing I ever wanted to do in life was be involved in racing - driving , wrenching or both , being in Panama there is some racing & I am meeting people here but I doubt anything will happen just like the first 50 years of my life , I can race on my own dime until I run out of $$ as usual . As far as building engine I love the challenge but there are close to zero muscle cars here , I think I have seen a total of 10 in 18 months , I saw that many in 1 day in Puerto Rico so there is no market to build engines here . Probably in 10 years I will have forgotten most of it from not using it . There is no source for parts or blocks or anything like that here & shipping in or out is rediculously expensive , the only option I can offer is I am willing to fly to you .
I seriously cannot see my Chall ever making it here , it is just too expensive & I have very little cash to do it so I assume Iwil sell it but I do not want to give it away or sell in this repressed market
