440 Engine ID Boss #'s?
« on: September 02, 2012 - 06:10:22 PM »
It's suppose to be the date & series #'s, but I can't interprete them. 1  1     172      1st line is B 440  Makes it a 1966 motor. A little help would be appreciated. Thanks!

You should be able to find out some valuable 440 block info here.

How about a pic of the side of the block as well as the raised stamped area opposite the distributor.

B denotes 1966 build.

Dunno on the rest but if you want the hour the block was built you look at the side and look at the clock as it will point at the hour. As well with HP blocks you will either have an HP or HP2 designation which shows block built on first shift or second shift (day or night).

I believe the serial number on the side of the block will give you an approximation of the date it was made.

Forged crank, six pack rods are the big differences.

There are stories of the make of the block being better than later builds but there has been considerable docs to the contrary especially about block thickness.
