I wonder if it works only in the USA? ( I'm in Canada) or anywhere in the world? Lots of these cars end up in shipping containers headed for the middle east, etc....?

If your car ends up in the middle east your gonna need seal team six to get it back!

 Seriously though I have lojack on my daughters Volvo we bought it used and I discovered a Lojack certificate in the glovebox, I took that to my ins co and recieved the maximum discount for having an anti theft device on my car. If your ins co offers an anti theft discount this is another reason to consider Lojack. I probably wont bite on this offer but it does seem like a good deal.

What kind of battery chemistry is used? Is it Nimh, li-on, ?

Once the two years are up, do you just swap out the battery or what?

I don't know if the system runs indendently from it's own battery or not.
However, the remote is a common application coin cell which I have.

The unit is self-powered, and the battery is expected to last 7 years. 

I just had this installed.  Took about an hour to figure out where to install it.

Cost with the discount was $295, and the extended warranty was another $99.  During my discussions with the sale person, I was told about the periodic checks, which they do every 2 years.  Big surprise was not conveyed to me at that time was that service fee for that was an additional $99 to come out for the 3 minute check. 

Its good for peace of mind.  Now I just hope I never have to use it.

The coin cell is only for the remote if you buy the RFID movement pack.

The basic has a small lithium pack which I believe is probably something like a 2S 900mah pack and there circuitry must draw something very low to last 7 years. But the higher end system which has the movement detection also has an additional lithium pack to the base model.
