Question about paint
« on: September 06, 2012 - 01:36:23 AM »
Just thinking ahead about the paint for my car. I'm gonna use the 71 Challenger red, I believe it is Rally Red.

I just wanted to figure out if I should use Acrylic Enamel, Acrylic Laquer, or Acrylic Urethane. Its gonna be a base clear, so any info on primer/clear selection would be helpful. Only paint that I have ever done is an acryclic enamel on one of my pickups.

For solid colors, I would say Acrylic Urethane single stage, not base/clear.  Much easier to touch up later.

So with that paint I just buff it and no clear is needed?

That is correct, but keep in mind single stage won't be as good as base/clear as the years go by.

My opinion is Base/Clear stick with one good system like PPG,Sikkkens,Standox. They are expensive but well worth the money.Paint and Body is what I do for a living, been doing it for over 28 years now.Base/Clear is much easier to take care of and will last longer as long as you take care of it.You can always get some single stage for touch ups.The paint job on my Charger R/T is 22 years old and if you saw it would think that it just got painted.Everything really depends on what you are going to do with the car and also how much $ your willing to spend. You can see pics of my car at E-Bod Pics section Tread Not an E-Body But.Just my 2 cents worth.      Good Luck Sam
