70 Challenger RT/SE Best Power Train Combo
« on: September 08, 2012 - 08:41:07 PM »
To restore or not is the question.  I have a 70 RT SE in dark green with black interior.  It seem no one in my family likes the color, my wife wants it painted Orange and my girls want Purple, myself I like Sassy Green, but the Dark Green is nice.  The interior will stay Black, since I just purchased new seat covers and  door panels today.  Cause the motor and trans are missing, and the original 383 was a factory replacement motor in 72, it wont be numbers matching car. I would like to hear what other think about going back to the 383 727 combo or a 340 or 360 833 4 speed.  This car is not to be a trailer queen, but will be driven about 4 months of the year in town and road trips.  If the car a rare color combo, then it will be returned to factory.  If anyone knows how many were painted in the color combo please let me know.

For a road trip car, I'd do a nicely built small block with a tremec 5 speed. An auto with overdrive would work nicely too. Less to think about.

I'm not knowledgeable about color rarity, but I'm partial to purple out of those options... but with white interior. heh

Car is old so make it look close to stock with a 400 or 383. You can stroke it if you want power and stilll make it look like it came that way. Fuel inject it with the EZ-EFI kit for gas mileage and hide it under the air cleaner. To save money and gas, build a 727 and put 3:23 or 2:76 gears in the rear for MPG. The big block will still smoke tires if built right and you'll get to drive on the highway as fast as you want.

As fas As color, I have 2 orange cars that get lots of attention. My friend has a purple Challenger that gets lots of attention from women and little girls. I don't like purple or green but that's  my taste.  Pick a color you've always wanted and you'll enjoy the car a lot more when you are cruising it BY YOURSELF. I would pick an impact color.

It really all depends on how much you want to spend on it for the end result.

Wrecking Yard drop in 318/340/383/440 Engine and 727 Trans? Rebuilt? Crate Motor options? Carb or EFI?
4 Speed Conversion Cost if you go that route.
Go with something Reliable, Cost Effective.

Exterior Paint is like hair color, you can change it often!

For what its worth.....my car was originally an F8 383 R/T SE, much like yours with a non original 383. I wasnt a fan of the dark green and as you can see from my avatar, I didnt paint it green ;D if it was a Hemi car I might say keep it original, but even then its YOUR car so paint it whatever color YOU want.

Shelby basically recommended my car :roflsmiley: I have a stroked 400 w/ EZ-EFI, an 833 OD 4-speed, and 3.55 gears.  It looks like a 383, has the power of a 440, gets good gas mileage and is fun to drive.

I just love fuel injection. I'm converting my Edelbrock Pro Flo multiport fuel injection to EZ-EFI's computer right now. I should be out cruising in a couple of hours. I also run a 833 OD but with 3:23 gears behind a 440 and get 20 mpg or better.

Think about gas mileage when you build your car. It doesn't really matter how many green cars there are out there. Pick one you like.
