Would you remove front drum brakes for disc
« on: September 11, 2012 - 10:21:52 PM »
I'm debating on whether or not to replace my front drums and replacing them with disc brakes. The car is a 440 six pack 1970 challenger rt se numbers matching carbut I'm afraid of lowering its value by doing that . I use the car at shows and occasional drives . What would you folks do ?

I'd keep the drums.

If I drove it a lot, I'd put on the discs and save the drums to reinstall if/when needed.

You own a 440 six pack rt/se and your forum name is 'Stang"???

what is the intent of the car ? Are you keeping it indefinatly . Personally I would swap to a stock disc set up but keep all the drum parts . I own a 70 R/T SE as well & swapped to stock front disc but then I never intended to sell the car . If you are worried about resale 1st I doubt it would hurt it as long as you have the original parts , or 2nd just leave it alone seeing as it si rarely driven & probably never hard .

All it took was one panic stop on drums to make my mind up.  Do the swap and keep the drum parts.

YEAH ROUSH MUSTANGS!

I would probably go for disk brakes. A few years ago I was working on some drum brakes with my friend. We stretched the spring on the inside and it got away from us. I stupidly was not wearing safety glasses and needless to say I am lucky I still have both eyes. From then on I decided, "no more drum brakes for me!"

This.

I'd put discs on a slant six car, even if I hardly drove it.

I agree with changing them out but keeping the drum parts.  Even if you don't drive hard it is safer IMO.

Who makes a good kit? stock or otherwise to keep the 15" rim? I have 73 that I was planning on stealing from until my son (2) is old enough to drive. but if I could pick up another set I would

I used SSBC http://www.ssbrakes.com/  for my front and rear and my 14in rims still work. Both were easy to install.  And as for Stang13 pump pump skid sucks. Just the fact of driving a modern car, you forget in a quick thinking situation that you arnt gonna stop as safe and as quick.

Master power makes a good kit, I opted for the power brake upgrade. You'll have to use 15" rims with it.

Ever been in a fast car and cannot stop when you want to, you will only do it once.

Make the change and don't look back.... you'll be glad you did!

The pic below is a front disc kit from SSBC.

I would agree to put on the disc's for safety and save the OEM drum parts.
