T56 Magnum to Mopar E-Body Cross Member
« on: September 13, 2012 - 03:56:51 PM »
There are enough folks heading down this route that I've been asked to make another run of the T56 Magnum cross members for the E-Bodies.  Here's a shot of the production unit that will be powder coated chassis black.  This is manufactured from laser cut steel that is TIG welded while being held in a fixture.

Best regards -
Tony Edler

Looks great. What else is needed beyond this to do the swap? I know there is work required to the trans tunnel and I would imagine a hydraulic throwout bearing conversion, driveshaft, clutch, etc. I wish someone offered a complete kit or a how-to on the conversion.

Please use this list below for your needs.  This will cover most of the components for the installation.  I did this document back in 2010 for a few installations that we did.  Please be prepared for some base sheet metal fabrication.  If the sheet metal is a challenge to you, I would recommend finding a decent shop that help with this work.  The threads here on this forum are packed full of photos that will give your fabricator a good idea of the level of difficulty allowing you to get a fair price.  This installation itself is straight forward - just with a really big transmission.

T56 Magnum to 3G HEMI Mopar including LA engine series
Also covers B / RB engines using a different Quick Time Bell Housing

Bell Housing – Quick Time
The Quick Time bell housing is the best solution for the Mopar adaptation.  The T56 Magnum transmissions bolt pattern is the same as the T56 Viper transmission.  The bell housing part numbers for the T-56 Magnum to various mopar engines (with notes) are listed below:

Small Block Mopar (LA) and 3G HEMI is Quick Time P/N RM8074.  The bell has a 6.697” bell depth (add .125 for the block plate for total depth)  Uses the standard 2-Bolt starter from Mopar. 130 tooth fly wheel must be used.

Big Block Mopar (B & RB) is Quick Time P/N RM8073.  The bell has a 6.697” bell depth (add .125 for the block plate for total depth)  Uses the standard 2-Bolt starter from Mopar.  130 tooth fly wheel must be used.

3G HEMI ONLY – 08/09 Challengers - Quick Time P/N 8077.  The bell has a 7.300” bell depth (add .125 for the block plate for total depth.  Use stock 3G HEMI starter that is located on the passenger side of the vehicle.  Must use the original flywheel and clutch assembly (65 #’s in weight – all cast iron).  This bell housing is NOT recommended for the retrofitting into older muscle cars.  Current year use only.

Note: When ordering the bell housing from Quick Time – you must state that they will be used with the T56 Magnum transmission – Quick Time will machine the cutouts that are required for the ribs that are found on the T-56 Magnum front case.  Hydraulic line access points are installed in the bell housing.  By this time (November 2010) all conversion bell housings should be machined with the T56 Magnum casing provisions.

Roller Pilot Bearing
The new Magnum T56 uses the same roller pilot bearing as the Chevy TKO 5 Speeds.  The GM part # is 14061685 and AC Delco is CT1078.  This bearing will have to be press fit into the pilot bearing adaptor just like the Mopars currently do.  $59.00

Transmission Isolation Mount
Isolation mount – Energy Suspension. The thickness of the energy suspension mount is just a shade over 2.0” (2.022”).  This is the Chevy mount with the 1.50 center to center with 7/16-14 mounting screws required at the mount.  $30.00

Transmission Cross Member
Cross member – Global Overdrive T56 to Mopar E-Body Cross Member with hardware (cross member to chassis and cross member to isolation mount)  $229.00

Speedometer Cable
The T-56 Magnum uses the same speedometer cable as the TKO family of transmissions. Mechanical and Electrical Connections are available on the transmission.  Use the standard E-Body speedometer cable for mechanical applications.  $99.00

Flywheel and Clutch w/ Hardware
3G Hemi Flywheel – Use existing McLeod 464108 for the 3G HEMI flywheel – 8 bolt crank flange, 130 tooth.  This flywheel is the only one on the market that has the correct diameter bolt holes at this time.

3G HEMI Flywheel Hardware - Use METRIC Hardware for attached to the crankshaft –
Qty. 8  10mm x 21mm long  Grade 12.9  ARP only

Clutch: 10 ½” standard clutch  - Clutch hardware is standard IFI specification grade 8.

Clutch Disc – 1 1/8 -26 spline clutch disc.

Clutch Alignment Tool – Centerforce 26 spline alignment tool.

Starter
When using the Quick Time bell housing it is recommended to use the Mopar Performance mini / hi-torque starter.  Stock Mopar location is on the drivers side of the engine.  (Customer Supplied)

Output Yoke
31 Spline Ford C6 output shaft yoke – Same as the TKO series.

Clutch Hydraulics
The use of the Chevrolet (Green Bearing) clutch hydraulics with a Tilton Master Cylinder is to be used and coupled with the bracket for the Mopar E/ B-Bodies.

Updated 1/04/10 – Added quick time information – Sourced roller pilot bearing.  Starter is verified.  Corrected all bell housing information and added note for specifying the T56 Magnum when ordering.

The drive line angle is set at the stock angle of 2.5 degrees down.

The shifter can be sold separately as well.

If anyone is interested in installations and willing to send your car to Mid-Missouri.  I'm thinking a nice installation article for Mopar Muscle is in order showing all the hoops and pitfalls of performing this installation.

Thoughts anyone?

Scott - The cross member that is shown fits the 70-74 E-bodies and 71-74 B-bodies.  The 66-70 cross looks very similar to the TKO cross member for the TKO's.  I have that unit completed as well.
