barn finds?
« on: September 16, 2012 - 01:29:45 PM »

Hi guys and gals, i looked and i couldn't find a barn find post? maybe there should be one of the old cudas and challengers we all find along the way. Well here is one i found.
I posted a ad about 9 months ago locally looking for a cuda to buy, i got a text from someone saying there's a 71 cuda (turns out to be a barracuda grand coupe) behind a old shop/ restaurant but the guy wont sell it.you can see it from the highway..

so i go and look, talk to the guy and nope, its not for sale. I ask can i look at it.. nope... I talk with him a little more and he said well what would you offer.. I say i well need to look at it. so he pops the hood and lets me take a peek. i see two fender tags, turns out the car was made the day i got married! June 9th.
the thing you need to understand is this guy is a hoarder. i couldn't see under the car, the inside was packed full of stuff and it has been parked under a carport type thing for the last 25 years. i ask if i can craw around and look, nope time to go.. so im back at the truck talking to him and he tell me he has a 71 se charger and a 71 plum crazy purple RT with a 440 air grabber, gill fenders,... can i look? nope..

Ten minutes later hes like come look at this charger lol, he also has a 1936 Packard Hurst but nothing was for sale. As we talk a little longer he said hes in trouble and might loose his house but still doesn't want to sell. I leave my name and number and tell him to call me, He has no phone or email.
I go back another time and no one is there, wait another month and the wife and I are going past and i see that all his cars are gone! so i pull over and look, crap i missed it. well he pulls in the drive way and i guess hes moving everything. he lost part of his property or is getting ready to sell.. but still doesn't want to sell the barracuda.

So once again i leave my number..Then i was like i want to look at this car as its bothering me, I post a add on Craigslist looking for the guy and boom 4 days later he calls, I'm thinking that's fast for someone who doesn't have internet. Well hes all disappointed its me as he thought it was someone who offered him a job up north, so i talk to him a little and he says come look at it im not really into selling it but we can see i wont take less than 10,000 for it.. and even then i don't know. ( forgot i ran into him in a store once and asked him about selling it)

So Im like well im not going to pay 10g for it, then a few weeks later he calls me and leaves me a message saying Im going to sell it come look at it or ill get someone to post it on the internet. I cant get out there for a few days as im working night shifts, i call him on my way and he says oh i didn't know if you got my message or not, well i dropped the price to 7g as you were right there might be a little rust on the floors, I continue on my way there with a pocket full of 8g, so i remove a little more out of the envelope thinking hey i might get this for 5g as that's closer to what it is worth..

Well that's where the sad part starts, i get there and its sitting out in a field in the daylight and shes not as nice i it was hidden away in that dark carport. The grill was cracked in a few spots, 70 fenders and one door on the car. I lift up the carpet and the floor comes with it, there's a hole beside the rear window under the vinyl. I stick my camera under the car and start snapping pictures and it reviles more rust. i couldn't get into the trunk as he broke the key, the steering column is wrecked as he tried to break it, and the whole time hes saying oh its not that bad you can fill that with some lead. the cars in rough shape and i cant really use many parts from it yet there is some i can use but it needs a lot.

Car was originally a 318 auto. from what i can see it will need, new fenders, quarters, rockers, trunk, roof, im guessing frame rails ect, over 5g in metal parts alone. so as you could imagine i was a little upset. the guy only has a bill of sale for the car too as he never registered it, I would have to do some work to get the title in my name.

He called me yesterday and left a message asking what i wanted to do , i know he need money pretty bad, I don't want to kick the guy when he is down or anything but i don't think i would pay much more than 2000 for the car. the 318 ran when he parked it but not anymore. This car is too far gone for me i think. So it goes down in the barn find. enjo

Well that's a shame, maybe someone will buy it and restore it.

If he wasn't such a hoarder he wouldn't have to worry about how much money he inst going to make on it today.

Hah, yeah, what's the deal with the rear window louvers?  Free set of louvers with every Barracuda you buy?  :roflsmiley:

What did that purple hood belong to?  :clueless:

That's a healthy looking set of fender tags...  :grinyes:

Thanks for the info.

Yeah, that car at fort when you see it maes you go  but after looking at how much metal work is needed makes you think twice.

But man, so many options on that car.  Would be cool to see it restored back to factory and just put a set of steel wheels with Plymouth hubcaps on it.

That interior is the saddle tan.
HemiKen sure has helped that color grow on me.

I agree with putting it back to original.  Interior.
Not such a fan of the exterior color.
Black with the saddle tan interior would look stunning!

Honestly, if you can get it between 2-3K  it is worth getting it out from there.
Someone would want that for that price.

My concern is if has that much rust I can see you know your going to find more, I think it's the seventh picture you can see the carpet from underneath the car. Roof has rust it has it everywhere. Might be a better project for a shop than me. Cool colors
