don't know why I didn't join before.......
« on: September 24, 2012 - 11:17:00 AM »
I've known of this site for years and have even browsed the forum a few times but, for some unknown reason, had never registered until now.
I am the long-time owner of a 1971 Challenger Convertible. I've owned the car since I was 18 years old in 1988.
Tragically, I recently had a house fire and the Challenger was in my garage that burned to the ground. For anyone interested in seeing the aftermath, this link is to the news station that had a segment on my tragedy featuring the car as part of the story.
http://www.ksdk.com/video/default.aspx?bctid=1759641867001&odyssey=mod|tvideo|article (not spam but there is an advert at the beginning of the video)(car featured aprox. 1 min into the video)
The car was completely burned and I have been trying to cope with it as best I can but I have not given up hope that I might be able to rescue my beloved convertible.
Aside from my love of the cars, I'll be here as part of my information and resource gathering mission to save/restore my car.
Nice to be here and see everyone around the forums.
P.S. I'll eventually be making a post about the tragedy with pictures of what's left of the car so stay tuned.

Glad you joined up but what a sad story!  Curious how much the insurance gave you for the loss . . . . . did you have an appraisal?  Sad situation for sure!   :walkaway:

hey Marc,  welcome to CC
so sorry about your car. Looks like a LOT of heat went through.  I don`t want to kill any hope you have left, but on a molecular level, that sheetmetal is most probably destroyed.  If you will be able to get things straight again, the parts that went through this heat will keep on biting you with rust and cracks.  again, I really feel for you, but think twice before dumping loads of money into the car.

  Welcome aboard.

Hope you can save your car.
I believe the structure is usable, but haven't really gotten a 100% yes about that.
As for the sheet metal very likely no.

  Hi Marcm welcome to the site.

Really sorry to hear about the car.  At least no one got hurt.  I hope you can build it up again.

Did that car have a fiberglass hood?  :clueless:

I believe the structure is usable, but haven't really gotten a 100% yes about that.

I've heard both of those before as well. I figured the exterior sheet metal is a complete loss. My hopes lie in the main body (frame/body tub/body-in-white). With it having been almost completely assembled I'm hoping that the body structure was somewhat insulated from the worst of the heat.
I'm hoping this because of other things I'm finding while digging through the remains of the garage. I also deal in parts and had many of them in my garage when the fire occurred. The stack was so big that I actually found a Dodge Ram headlamp (all plastic) that was in the middle of the pile, still in it's box and completely unscathed. That was a shocker.
From the get-go I've been conferring with high-end restoration shops to find out for sure but I won't be spending any money on the car unless a reputable shop gives me the green light and says it can be saved for sure.

Curious how much the insurance gave you for the loss . . . . . did you have an appraisal?
Here's the thing about that. Something I was unaware of was that even though the car was in my garage it was NOT covered under my home owners policy. Turns out, if you have a car in your garage, it still has to have it's own insurance. Since I was not finished with the car yet (engine & trans still out of the car), I didn't have coverage on it yet. Hence, to answer your initial question.....noting at all. However, everything else inside of the garage and inside the house IS covered so I will be making many sacrifices in order to use that money towards my car.
Did that car have a fiberglass hood?  :clueless:
Good eye just from watching the video. Yes it did. I had a T/A hood on the car when the fire happened. All that was left of it was the fiberglass matting. The dual scooped hood was also in the garage and got pretty wasted but I threw it back on the car just to get it up off the ground.
A big thanks to everyone for all the warm welcomes, well wishes and good advise. It means a lot to me in my time of trouble. I think I will make a posting about this to continue the conversation. I'll put a link to it here as soon as I do.
