9 psi is too high , carbs can work with up to 7 psi & prefer 6 psi . Not sure how well a reg will work with a pulse type pump though

So now my next question is,  how would fuel pressure affect this?  Have a mechanical pump and 5/16 lines no return but do have the vapor return setup but line is capped in the engine compartment.  Pressure fluxuates (i guess with the cam action of the pump) between 4 and 9.  Would a regulator be a good idea and how would this (if any) affect the pump?

Doug,

I have almost the same setup. A Hi-volume mechanical fuel pump, with no return line. Even though is states that this is a street pump, it was putting out 8.5 to 9 PSI. I put a regulator on it  to get it to 6 PSI and have had no problems for 5 years now. (I had an electric pump before).

I wonder why yours fluctuates? Do you have a mechanical fuel gauge in line after the fuel filter?

I would assume the fluctuation is from the pump arm riding the cam giving it a pulse action that I can see one the gauge because it is om between the pump and carb.  Guess ill order up a rewg and try it.

still having difficulties with this,  reset timing to 16, reset all 4 corners to about 3/4-7/8 out which leaned it up and idles down to around 88o with the dist vac off and a vac gauge on,  reading about 11/12" at idle, when i reconnected the dist timing ran up to about 38,  pull it in gear idle drops to about 700 and sluggish, and when i reconnected the power steering belt it changed even more.  errrrrr  :pullinghair:    i do have the dist vac on the full manifold vac port on the carb,  or should it be on one of the timed spark ports?  :dunno:   following brads quickfuel post,  i guess maybe even increasing the bleeds?  or drill the plates?  this is making me nuts   :1zhelp:

If you wind the idle screws out it makes it richer?  I think you suposed to adjust till the idle goes highest and the most vac, then readjust the idle on the linkage? With mine I have the dizzy vac on full manifold vac.

Doug,

You should feel no vacuum at idle from the rubber hose leading from the carb to the distributor. If so, you have it on the wrong port. The vacuum will come in play as your RPM's increase.

Mike I'll throw a tand the gauge on it tomorrow and see what "timed spark"gives me as far as vac. I hate working 5 to 1:30 but gives me mornings and afternoons to mess aroun in the shop

Timed spark port is around 5"at idle and full manifold port is 11 to 13. I put on the airfilter and it changed even more. Took off the vac line and blocked it checked timing and its at 16. Reconnected vac line and hit the light on the mark and its hitting at around 38 but I notice it jumps around quite a bit. So I'm wondering if I may have a distributor problem too

38* at idle?
this is why I leave the vacuum advance disconnected , it should not advance the timing at idle at all , you should have a reading of 0 for the dist at idle .

So, your saying with the timing set at 16*  do not connect the vac line to the dist. simply plug the vac port on the carb and leave it be?  :clueless:  please bear with me as i learn

Yes.

Vacuum advance works for some, while others just plug the port from the carb and add a little more initial advance. 16* might be too much, but you'll know in time if you have detonation(pinging).

Vacuum advance is purely for fuel economy. Not necessary otherwise.

Did all of the above. Idles good drops about 150rpm when I put it in gear but,,, and there's always a but. Going down the street stutters along almost like its not getting good spark pull back in the shop check timing and it is out. Guess maybe a new distributor is in order?  Or at least a new cap?  Wish I had a better set of more experienced eyes on this. Any suggestions on a distributor?  When I installed the new cam I didn't change the distributor gear. Maybe I should have?  Can I rebuild the distributor.?  What to try next?
