I'm sorry for now triple posting but it is not letting me modify my previous posts for some reason. I'm using Chrome if that makes a difference.

I was looking through the parts that came with the car and I found 2 sets of motor brackets. Someone tell me that one of these will work?

Those should work.
They look like the ones on this engine I installed.

The ones on the right should work, the left are big blocks

Have not had a big block yet.

Al, do all big block mounts have the tube on only one mount?

Cool, thanks a lot guys. I'm really hoping to have this ready to put in this weekend. The weather is just starting to get nice out.

I've ran into another problem, the torque converter is not slipping onto the tranny like I thought it would. I have a BB 727 and the TC slips on and off no problem. Is there something I'm missing? I've tried holding it on there and spinning both directions but it's just not going in.

It seems as though the part that goes inside the tranny is too big, but it seems nearly identical to the supposed bad TC that came with the car, and I can't get that one to fit on the tranny either.

As always, thanks for any advice

So you are trying to fit it into a sm block 727  or is it a sb 904 ?   If 727 sometimes it can be a real biatch. By the way, make sure the snout on the converter weld is smooth on the edge welds, or it can take out the front pump seal.  The converter ears also may be tight since it is new. Also make sure you hava a non lock up right year converter.

Look in the trans and find the tabs of the pump and note their orientation, then eyeballing the converter, try to slide it in in the same position, this should get you pretty close and you may have to take hold of the converter with both hands and moving it in and out only a 1/4", bump it and turn it VERY gradually one way or the other until it engages and fits in all the way. Don't force it and take your time; it'll go.  :2cents:

Thanks for the tips, it is a SB 727 that I'm trying to fit the TC in. Pulled the tranny out last night so I could see what I was doing a bit better but no luck still. I'll get back at it tonight but it is very frustrating.

The welds look smooth, I've tried lining up the tabs, the Transmission place told me it was for a 72... they did give me the wrong flex plate first time around though so having the wrong converter is a possibility.

Wish I could take off the bellhousing to see just how far in it is going.

Since you have the trans out now, stand the trans on its tailshaft, put the trans in neutral  and then set the verter in and spin it. You can also lift it up and down as you spin it all this usually lets it go in. It would go in to where as when you take your pointer finger and put it on the bottom inside of the case, it will go about 1.5 knuckle deep to be all the way in. Once it is in all the way and hooked to the engine, you will have to pull it forward about half in or a little more. Hope this helps.

Well, I do prefer plymouth over dodge  But I have been known to own and build a few dozen dodges  :roflsmiley:   I do like to help anyone that seems to be over their head when it comes to being dedicated to their car and may cost more than it really needs to :2thumbs: I only wish I had even more experience in all the areas of a build. That is where this site kicks azz the best, when all chip in on help and eventually we see it in our calender or at a show event like Carlisle.   There are some very nice cars here and very skilled people here to.

Can't believe it's almost June already! I'm sorry for the sporadic responses, your guys' advice has not been falling on deaf ears. School and work have just been kicking my butt. Just one semester to graduation! I have made a lot of newby mistakes thus far, hopefully others in my position can learn from them. I know I won't be making them again...

1. I found out that my transmission is actually a 1976 904. This is based on the "PK" part number stamped into the side of the tranny. I wish I could find the site that had all of the numbers listed, but I can't at the moment. I will update if I do find it, however. Once I got the proper torque converter, it slipped in nicely.

Should this transmission fit? It appears that the tailshaft is going too far passed crossmember where it bolts up to.

2. The gas tank sending unit I bought has two lines leaving it. Two lines run back from the front of the car but one goes up into a tube/pipe in the trunk. There are also four tubes that leave the tank and go into that same tube in the trunk (for venting?). I don't get it, what do I do with that other line coming out of the sending unit? Also, I think I found the wire that goes to the threaded part on the sending unit but I won't screw on, does it just push on?

3. My battery is already routed through the trunk, the positive wire should go to the starter, but then what wire connects the starter to engine harness, etc.? Or does the pos wire also connect to the harness somewhere?

4. How does the gas tank filler/feed neck stay up where it is supposed to? I see four screw holes in the neck itself but nothing on the body of the car.

Thank you very much, it would be near impossible without this forum's help.   :angelwings:

Tips/things I learned:
Make sure the motor mount brackets and rubber mounts are on the engine before dropping in. I have found it easiest to just slip the long bolt through the K member, one bolt each side. The brackets attach to the backside of the ear tabs on the block. Do not try to drop the engine in with the headers attached, not worth having to take them off in the middle of install.

Push some paper towels into the tailshaft of the tranny before install/removal. I ended up with a lot of tranny fluid down sleeve and into my jacket.

Cover the top of the gas tank with plastic/a gas tank pad to avoid water collecting up there. The gas tank feed neck needs a grommet. Make sure to have the sending unit pickup go towards the bottom of the tank.

The oil pan on the engine I have is for a truck, I was too hasty and have found this out the hard way, it hits the steering linkage. I will be pulling the engine and putting the right pan on this weekend.

Pictures:

Being lifted by big block motor brackets

A lot of sanding was necessary. And Remmy hangin out.

Primed, 3 coats or so

Mock up

Gonna look mean

Yeah, those headers had to come off

Gas tank installed, looks ghetto but it was done pretty well. Recoated the inside of the original tank, the plastic is pretty snug across the top.

Moderator: if you would like this thread in the official build forum, please move it, I don't know how.

Made plenty of progress today, got the engine and trans fully bolted in. Feel free to ask me w/e.

Missing front bumper brackets still.

Fan's a little close. Rad from 73 Charger, had to drill new holes

Still need to sand and repaint, I like the scheme coming together tho!

1 Gauge new wire.
