Pilot Bearing / Bushing

Okay, I'm doing some work on my Cuda (70), I removed the 4speed (833), bell housing, clutch & PP from the car .. ..There was no pilot bushing or bearing previously installed.  The engine is a 73 340 from an automatic car......  I am going to install a rebuilt 833 & a new clutch, pp, etc..  I am about  to put in a pilot bearing or bushing (i have both).....  It looks like I have enough room to install both. Has anyone ever done this?
Also, when installing the 833 back in the car, is it easier to install the bell housing first and then the transmission? or install the bell housing to the transmission & install the whole thing together?

Opinions???      Thanks in advance...

I install the bell housing, clutch n stuff first, then the trans.  But usually bb stuff.  Is your 73 an external balance engine ? if so, your 70 flywheel (internal) will not work even tho it's a 130 tooth.  And not sure about a 73 340 auto crankshaft for a 4 speed for the pilot hole depth. You need to measure and not just visual check. Sometimes it will look like a bushing will fit, but it will be too small inner hole. The register for the bearing will work, but the trans input snout may be a few thou to long and bottom out. Be sure to check these issues. It can become a pain once you try to install and find out it isn't quite right.  Vibration is a ***** when the input hits the back of the crank.

Well, there was an 833 transmission in there already, I pulled it out last week. (there was no pilot bearing /bushing)..
I have a rebuilt tranny (Passon) that i am going to put in.....  I can slide the new bushing in and it also looks like I can install the bearing as well...  Can you put in both? Any problems with doing this??

Dont do both, also, if the bushing slides in and out by hand, it shouldn't. It's pressed in. The transmission you pulled out, is the shaft cut off shorter?  Sounds like a back yard guy worked on it before you. The nose on your rebuilt input will have a taper to it for use when installing. The old trans, if it is flat, it is cut off short. If not, then you may have a deep enough crank hole but they didnt install bushing. If that is the case, the bearing is a good choice

the brg is probably a better choice as the hole may not be machined properly for the bushing being an auto , make sure the hole is deep enough in the crank , you can drill it it nessisary

It appears to be deep enough (i hope)...  I can place the bushing in (there is also more room to press it in -- "should it bottom out"?) and then it look like I can install the bearing ( I won't do both)..  Does anyone know the measurement of how deep it should be in the crank to accept the tranny? (I can measure it now -- how deep should it be from the face of the flywheel?)

Unfortunatley, I don't have the old tranny -- I gave it to Passon as a core..

I am going to attempt the install after a receive the clutch, should be next week......

if you have more then 1/4 deeper than the bushing you should be OK , the bushing shoul dbe a tight fit so I think I would use the brg

Thanks.....  just one more thing ----  bearing goes in "tapered" side first ..  correct?  and should I "knock" it in with a mallot?

I would use a seal driver or a block of wood , makes sense to put the tapered side inward  :2thumbs:
