ORIGINAL SCCA #76 CHALLENGER T/A FOR SALE
« on: October 03, 2012 - 04:11:26 PM »
http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/carsforsale/dodge/challenger/1481187.html

Asking $500,000 -- a beautiful concourse car and a golden opportunity!  Just saw this the last few days on Hemmings.  I remember when it was for sale back ~1980.

Would be great if we could see both the #77 and this #76 on the vintage race track scene again... together!  Those are my favorite races to watch.

That's just how they built em. Maybe Gurney thought with the black roof, the TA style stripe was too much additional black. Maybe a Chrysler exec insisted on it. Dunno.

Regarding the R/T stripe, to my knowledge, that stripe pre-existed before the T/A stripe, so, that's what they used.  Also, from what I've read of the history, Sam Posey made the decision that there was too much lime-green color (he, perhaps, actually didn't like the color, but that's what Chrysler corporate wanted), so, he insisted that at the least, the roof had to be colored black to reduce the overall quantity of lime-green.. and so it was!

Now, how about we all pool-up our money and make an offer.. sorta like a real-estate vacation time-share purchase?  I can come up with the first digit (5) ... can anyone come up with a few of the extra zeros?  I've personally seen this car back in 2010? when is appeared after its full restoration at the Vegas SEMA show... stunning!!!!!!!!!!!!

On my own Challenger that I've used for extensive SCCA Solo II/autocrossing competition, since the year 1976, I've always run either car numbers 76 or 77, predominantly 76.. in a personal tribute to thsoe two carts... those are the ONLY numbers that should be run for these two cars.. in tribute... IMO.   MAN... since this is MY predominat race car number, oh... how I wish I could own it.!!! (and I could've/should've back around 1980).

That car is what fuels my desire for 70 Challengers! Since I was 9 years old.......  :droolingbounce:

Does it show? I bought the vinyl roof trim with the intentions of painting the roof black. Toying around with the idea of making an aluminum front spoiler too.

Brad,

Just think, the front spoiler can double as a snow plow up there in Canada.   :thinkerg:

Yep I say so. It's easier to change gears for different tracks. Nascar Mopars did the same back in the day too.

It DOES say "OBO" - think he'll take $35,000 for it?    That's about what I could come up with

PS I bet if someone walked up with $400,000 in cash - they would take it.

Could the black roof be related to the story I heard? One of the Challengers just went through tech. Then the tech guy or somebody leaned on the roof and it partially caved in because of extensive acid-dipping. A replacement roof was gotten from a local Dodge dealer, cut from a NEW car, and welded on so they could race.

I'm sure I read that somewhere, but forgot where.  :clueless:  With all the acid-dipping that was done back then in all motorsports, it's a real possibility. Can anybody confirm?

I found an article about the incident, but it appears to be refering to the 77 car.  :dunno: Oh well. Cool story anyway!
