Wish i had one, the town is very strict and it would cost thousands of dollars just in permits,etc to even start digging in the ground...

Hey 72Cuda,

What kind of heating unit do you have hanging in there? I'm tired of freezing my butt off & hope to install something sometime this year before next winter. I'd like something out of the way like that & wondering how well it works for you.

It's a Modine Hot Dawg, 45,000 BTU natural gas heater (also can use propane). I love it. It keeps the garage at 40-45 degrees (keeps stuff from freezing), and can have it up to 60 degrees in 10 minutes. It's externally vented, so no CO or water vapor buildup inside.

I installed the heater myself (hangs from threaded rod and angle irons), only tricky part was cutting the hole for the external vent. I had a plumber run the gas line, and the electrician wired it when he put the subpanel in, but it's very simple (120 volt, 4 amp). I used an old digital thermostat that was lying around.

Like a lot of you guys I had no garage and had to work on my cars out in the yard but we finally were able to buy a two car garage with a detached cape.  :laughing: It was 24 x 24 with a nice big upstairs for parts storage.I went from a portable propane heater to a wood stove to a kerosene moblie home furnace for heat.

The wifey wanted a new house(tired of the old fixer upper) so we bought a nice one 2 miles away in the same town.

Unfortunetly it was attached to the garage which isn`t good as I do a fair amount body work and painting on my and my friends cars so I had a shop biult out back-24 x 30 but no upstairs as money was limited.Oil furnace,separate 100 amp electric service.I`m still working on getting it insulated and sheetrocked as funds will allow.I`ll be sure to get some pics of the inside once it`s all painted white and the posters(thanks 6pk!)and other Mopar paraphenelia are hung.

I cna't beleive they let you use copper for the gas lines.  I know that alot of people do it, but the guy from teh gas company told me that natural gas is corrosive to copper.  It's also not code acceptable in new jersey.  found that out the hard way.

Yikes!!! Danger Will Robinson!!!

The black pipe running vertically under the heater is the gas line. The copper is the airline from the compressor, runs back 20 feet or so to the regulator.

No way in he!! was I gonna do the gas line. Given my mediocre plumbing skills and the number of sweated joints in the system, I'm amazed the airline doesn't leak. Or explode. Used 3/4" schedule L copper.

A man's got to know his limitations.

72cuda Nice job with the hard copper for air, most just go with the plastic. I think it gives it a nice proffesional look...

Thanks Cranker, good thing you can't see the Quality Craftsmanship of some of those joints.   :laughing:

With a relatively short run to the drains, I think metal (copper or black pipe) gives you more cooling than plastic. Plus, when PVC airline gets brittle and lets go, I don't wanna be around.

I know there's specialty plastic stuff like Garage-Pak, but copper was a lot cheaper.

Yeah i know what you mean. i was in a friends shop when a pvc piece let loose at a 90 degree elbow. it was hooked to a 3/4 in hose and a 1 inch impact (semi tire work). pulled a little to hard on the hose and blamooo, pvc flying. I have to admit it was pretty cool, dangerous but cool. Thank god nobody got hurt...

 :thumbs:  Sounds good.  When I bought my house which was built in 1895, the whole gas line system was in 1/2" copper.  At the time it was only the heater and water heater.  When I installed the new heater and water heater, Gas range and dryer, I converted to black pipe.  When the guy from the gas company came to turn on the gas, he informed me that the copper wasn't going to cut it, but would turn it on anyway just so that I could have heat.  Doesn't that sound re-assuring?

Looks like I'm coming to this party late... Here's a few pics of my garage setup.
I'm planning on adding hard lines to the compressor to add capacity and allow a shorter length of hose to be used around the garage.

Dang, those are some awesome looking garages/shops!!!  Here's the detached 3 car I pretty much took over.  Besides, my parents still have the 2 car attached garage to have their car in.  The last picture is appropriately dubbed "My corner". :laughing:
