Sneaking up on a mountain lion video
« on: October 12, 2012 - 04:33:51 PM »
so, I was out hunting and me and my hunting friend snuck up on two lions.  A lioness and her cub.
The cub is around 75 pounds.  so, not what you might think of when you think cute little lion cut.

We managed to bump into these two cats 4 times throughout the day.
I do believe they had hunted us once or twice.
So I felt it my duty to hunt them.

I got to within 27 yards from their position as they rested.
I could of gotten closer but this was cool enough.  Especially since my mountain lion tag does not start until December.
No need for a confrontation. yet.

As many of you know, I killed my first mountain lion this year with a bow, alone, no dogs, no guns.  Just me and the lion.
Ever since then, I have been bumping into lions.
Lived here since 87 and have seen two in those years.
Now I take one and i have seen somewhere around ten different lions this year alone.

Let me know what you think.
You can see the cats walking away at about 2.20 minutes in.
Sorry for the terrible camera.  I am trying to save up to get a hunting camera so I can film my unique experiences.

I have some pics also if anyone is interested.

That is so cool.  In all the years I have been big game hunting here in Idaho I have only seen mountain lions 3 times. And we have a lot of them here.  Just last week there was a siteing of a mountain lion by a half dozen people right here in town on the green belt---a pathway system that runs along side the Boise river. They come out of the foothills from time to time and then go away.  Deer hunting just opened here Wed. so we are headed out in the morning.  Always exciting just finding lion tracks and knowing one is probably watching from near by. We have what is called a sportsman package hunting licence---wich gives you all your tags, deer, elk, bear, and lion.  Never know when an opportunity will present it's self.  Good luck this season.

Must be pretty cool to see something like that.

My only rule:

You kill it, you eat it!
Which I know you do.

I can't stand it when hunters just want the mount on the wall and throw the rest away.
Kinda like:  the Asian culture cutting fins off a shark and dumping the body back into the Ocean to make Fin soup.

Oh I eat it.

That sportsman's combo is a nice option.
I have to buy each one separate.  Each season is different around here.
Can't hunt lions until December.

A go pro is probably my next option.  I had one of these,  www.wildgameinnovations.com/products/action-cameras/ac5xc.html
It would fit on the bow.  Illegal in Colorado, but whatever.  I broke the camera in just about every way possible.
Took great film though.

What goes around comes around.  I guess so.  At least I give those lions a chance.

Actually, it is about the same.  The two families are very close in their actions and habits.

Honestly, the taste fits in right in between chicken and pork.

The meat is red, but cooks out white or barely pink.
Same texture as chicken or pork chops.

Really it's the best meat I have ever eaten.  Hands down.  The best.

And I'm from Louisiana and I have eaten just about everything.  Armadillo, possum, coon, nutria, snake, gator, various birds, squirrels, etc. etc. etc.

I am fully aware that when I hunt these animals, I can be eaten.  That is why I actuallly go with no gun, no dogs, no partner, just me and the lion.
There is alot to be said about leveling the playing field.  Definitely makes hunting more exciting.

By the way, there are over 500 cats taken from Colorado every year.  This keeps the populations down and keeps the deer population alive.
Without culling of the animal, the deer population, even more, the big horn sheep population would suffer drastic effects.  We have seen this before in this state.
By killing some, we're saving the over all population of lions, sheep, deer, etc.
