Intake bolt oil leaks (440-6 pack)
« on: October 13, 2012 - 01:32:17 PM »
So pretty sure i have one or more intake bolts seeping oil. Pools in the metal pan under the raised intake.
She's running really good and do not want to pull the entire intake off if I do not have to.
I understand the whole intake install from scratch with the bolt tghtening sequence etc..

My question: can I fix the leak by removing just ONE individual bolt, clean it, seal the threads, and re-torque it without removing/disturbing the entire manifold and gasket?

That works just fine. As long as that's where the leak is anyway.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I agree just remove the bolts one at a time & use some thread sealer or silicone to seal them & tighten them back up

Is this a common thing?

I've noticed this recently on my 383. It's not seeping major oil, but every few months I have to stick some paper towels under there to soak it all up.

Might try the above individual bolt removal/replace method with some added sealer. See what it does.

Thanks guys.
Prefered thread sealant?
Anyone know the torque for the bolts?

well I have used ultra black silicone but teflon thread sealer would work too , 30 ft lbs maybe , I have always been cautious about torquing them to much & stripping the heads & would just pull them tight by hand & check them after a few heat cycles , they usually loosen

Ah.. The oil comes up via the bolts..?
My intake had a giant puddle of oil underneath it aswell. I might need to do this too? I only used new gaskets on mine where the intake goes and silicone on the front and rear side of the pan.

A mechanic told me to use silicone with the gaskets or just silicone instead of gaskets on both intake and pan. But she's a woman, and can't be trusted...
Is it enough to just use silicone then?

Ultra black is the only one you should use. Best all around sealer when it comes to temps and oil abound.

like cp says,  go easy on torque.  manual says 30 ft lbs but that felt scary to me....

Im starting to get this on 1 or 2 of my bolts for my intake on my 383 in the charger and our chally is starting to get two of them doing it too.  Must just be something that occurs with time.  Like others have said, either pipe thread sealer with teflon or ultra black silicon usually works really well.
