Correct Gas Cap
« on: October 16, 2012 - 11:18:51 AM »
I need to get a gas cap for a 1971 Cuda with a build date of Oct 1970. I ordered one from Year One that states it is for 1971 cars built before May of 1971, which my car was. Well the cap is wall to small and doesn't fit. My car also has the gas tank with the 4 lines coming out of the side and the vapor canister in the trunk. The gas tank is new but the filler neck and canister are original to the car (as far as I know)

Search the motoradusa.com website (Catalog) for local dealers and your car.

I saw the gascap today in the Hardware Store for $18.99, it is listed as MGC-771 for a 1970 Challenger 440 with Flip Fuel Cap.

How correct are you  wanting the cap to be?
Here are some alternatives:

I am not so worried about being exactly correct but need something that fits. I have two different caps that I got that both don't fit. Does anyone know the differnce between a pre may and a post may gas cap? Or does Year One have their info wrong, no that couldn't be......

Here is a pict of my filler tube if anyone can tell anything by looking at it.

I was told that 1970 only filler necks have a "dent" near the top of the neck. Look inside the trunk under the latch. Just relaying what I was told. I do know that 1970 gas caps are a one year only for Cudas/Barracudas.

Yours look like mine.  I use this type cap that I sent ya earlier.  Show pic of your gas caps.
Go to the Stant website.  They show part #10806 is for Apr or older 1971, May or newer is part#10807.  Do you have both 1971 gas caps?  I read an article about the differences in filler necks and I don't remember where I found it.  The 71+ yrs, the fuel cap area protrudes farther out.  From what I see, yours look like a 70.
For 1970 the part# is 10623 w/o Ca emissions.

The new one that I got from Year One is just like the #10806, it is too small to fit the filler neck. Guess I need to try and find out the actaull dimensions of the outer part of the filler neck from 70 to 71. It is possible the filler neck is not correct because someone else started restoration of this car before I got it.

If this helps, I measured my fuel tank inlet.  It protrudes out appx 3/8", outside diameter 2 3/16", inside diameter 1 3/4", and the inside lug to lug 1 7/8".  This is for a 70.

On a Challenger for 1970 they had 2 different filler necks depending if you had CA emmissions or not? Maybe Cuda has the same issue?

I measured what I have.

OD = 2-5/16"
ID = 1-1/2"
Notches = 1/4" wide

a few yrs back I ran into the same problem with my Cuda fuel cap. Went to Autozone. Found one. very close to original and it fit perfectly. I will have to look for the part number...almost sure I save the package it came in for future use.
