AAR shipment
« on: February 26, 2005 - 03:06:53 PM »
Digging through the library and came across this shot that was taken May 1970 at First Avenue Plymouth in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It was the single largest AAR shipment to one dealer. There were 28 AARs dropped off that day. The totally ironic part was that Chrysler produced 2,724 AARs and were overstocked. A deal was made with First Avenue to take some at special pricing. The actual number that First Avenue took from this lot was 50, with the 28 pulling in at the same time. First Avenue would be like the Plymouth counterpart of Mr. Norm's Grand-Spaulding Dodge specializing in high performance cars. At any time they had an inventory from 100 to 150 road runners alone. Also they didn't drop below 3 hemicudas in stock for as long as the good times rolled. Sorry for the crappy shot.

And to think my big memory is of a single 70 hemicuda sitting on the showroom floor of Hillcrest C-P. I cant even imagine seeing 28 AAR's in one dealer!   Cool Pics!

I would of liked to seen that in person also. :worship: :worship: :worship: :worship:

I heard from somebody years ago that Plymouth dealers were a little leary of those special models             ( Superbirds )  because they sat on some showroom floors and had to be sold back to Chrysler. Some dealers gave up their option of getting an AAR so that is probably how others ended up with so many. Our local dealer had a Lemon Twist Superbird and AAR Cuda on the lot at the same time. They sold them locally. The AAR was totaled in 1975, but the motor lives on. The Superbird I lost track of.
I can remember going past the zone office in Syracuse,NY and seeing many Superbirds in the lot next to the Thruway. Even heard of a few being modified so they could be sold.
