Fuel return line routing
« on: October 19, 2012 - 10:07:13 AM »
Ok I need some advise! Ive tried everything, I just cant get rid of the vapor lock. My fuel pressure never fails to go to zero after my car warms up. I already custom bent new 3/8 line and heat wrapped all of it, i put a wood spacer underneath the carb and even blocked the heat crossover. Out of y'all who have run return lines how did you do it? I'm trying to bend me some line but I'm not exactly sure how it needs to be routed. I have a mechanical pump and a holley fuel regulator set to keep it at about 7 psi. I don't want an electric fuel pump. My fuel sending unit already has a provision for a return line it's just temporarily blocked off. How do I route this return line to work with my set up? Does it route back from the carb or does it have to return from a t styled regulator?  I'm so sick of the heat soak!! Please tell me how you have done it

Or do I have to have one of those funky vapor canister things?

I would go with the separator and return line it is designed to help cool the fuel also. If you put it in the problem will go away.

The issue though is that I have braided steel fuel lines for a dual feed holley dp.  How could I hook that up to rubber hoses from a vapor separator? I definitely don't want all rubber fuel lines, I feel like that would make the heat soak worse

The separator would be located low down by the fuel pump next to the timing cover 2nd bolt up you would only need a few inches of rubber line crimp clamped onto you supply line you would need a pipe fitting adatper that you put a small flared steel line on the end of for the hose hook-up should be able to put together something from your local hardware store.

Yes bad idea, I got the 1/4 inch stainless. I am eventually going to have mostly stainless lines on my ride. just rubber around the vapor separator and fuel filter, double flareing and crimp clamping.

Thanks for the pic. I was wondering how it mounted.

There's a thread on moparts that mentions that there are two new style vapor separators for sale.  They say one is crap and kills performance by dropping fuel pressure close to 2-4 psi. They also mention that the good one is awesome and helps solve vapor lock no problem!

Anyone know who sells the good one so I can order it and get back to  :burnout:

Thanks fellas!

Did you check for wear on your fuel pump pushrod? ( common issue?) I assume its a BB?

I just put a new fuel pump, the push rod is fine I was sure to check. The low pressure only happens after it heats up from driving for 15 minutes. It stays up at 7 psi at all rpm so the fuel pump is working great

Well I ordered a vapor separator from year one. Normally I don't buy from them but it was the only one I could find. 60 bucks is expensive but it'll be worth it if it works

I've had to resort to Year One a few times too, simply because nobody else had the part.

It only takes you a few weeks to get over the cost.     :money:
