Head unit install advice
« on: October 21, 2012 - 11:08:45 AM »
Guys/Gals:

Looking for some advice on installing a new head unit, (aftermarket).

My car already has an aftermarket head unit but it was installed incorrectly, I think. The radio is through its sleeve and just sits in the plastic bezel, no other support.

Is there a proper install kit for our cars or am I just missing a part?

Would I need an antenna adaptor for any newer style radios?

Thanks, Mike

Something sounds fishy about your aftermarket radio. There should be a sleeve(single DIN), that locks into the radio opening, then the radio will fit snugly in the sleeve and not rest on the bezel.

That why I buy from Crutchfield. They supply anything not provided in the basic radio installation kit, that I'll need.

Your original antenna will fit just fine.

Just ordered my head unit from crutchfield, be interesting to see if I get any differnet parts versus the old one.

Thanks, Mike

Never saw the update, was wondering what the verdict was????  I spoke to crutchfield and they said that there were no kits available for my car.

I also bought mine from Crutchfield and it went in great.  The only kit they do not offer is the wiring kit.  You need to splice in the new power to your exsisting wires.  Modern cars they have kits the you just plug in no splicing required.

My solution was to order a wiring adapter (Crutchfield includes N/C) for something common like a 90's Chrysler product that they also make a reverse wiring adapter for, add connectors to the reverse wiring kit to adapt to your existing wiring and add the adapter to the new radio then it will plug in easily. If you ever need to change head units just move the adapter to the new unit & plug in. One big advantage to this is all the soldering etc can be handled on the bench outside the car & you don't hack into the OE harness.
