NEW MEMBER 74' BARRACUDA
« on: October 27, 2012 - 07:45:43 PM »
How to start this story. Well sense I was sixteen I have always wanted a Cuda. First fell in love when I saw Monster Garage hosted by Jesse James and he was driving a Cuda. Dont know the year of that car but it was sweet. I live in the south so there is not many cuda/ challengers down here from the 60's and 70's. Every one here is intrested in Cameros'. Which im not hating, I like anything with a motor. I have grown up around cars and trucks all my life and have a pretty extensive collection of fire engines that my dad and I refurbish.

So at 23 I stumpled across a 1974 Barracuda that has been sitting in a barn for 6 to 8 years. After talking to the guy he pretty much gave me the car for nothing. He stated that he had no intrest in it an needed it out of his way. He claimed it didnt run and would prolly need alot of work to get it going.
So I loaded it up as quick as I could after practically stealing the car at such a low price. I brought the car home for alittle resto project. The car is a original 1974 barracuda with a 318. It has all matching numbers and has the original color but was repainted in 91'. I have tore this car down to bare bones and im gonna start from the bottom. I would say FRAME OFF but thats not possible. I joined this site looking for insite and knowledge. Like i said been around cars and trucks all my life, but this is the first MOPAR I have ever worked on or owned.

I will post pics of when I first saw the car at the barn and as I restore it, but till I get those here some car porn.

Welcome!

Thanks for the immediately gratifying pictures.

I can't wait to see the pics of the car in the barn.  Those are my favorite.

What is the color code for your car?

Does it have a build sheet with it?

Alright here is the barn pic. Once I got it home I put some gas in her and fired it up on the third turnover. I dont know the codeoff the top of my head, but the color is Sienna. Plans are to make a drivable sleeper. I am reading up on building the 318 hoping for 350 to 400 horses.I know its just a 318 but it is one that matches the car. and im all for keeping it as original as I can. Any in put is appreciated like I said im a new born mopar man. So let me know what yall think. I had a little rust in the fire wall where the drain for the wiper motor was. And a little more rust under the pedals. i have replaced the floor pans and now working on the firewall. Will get pics as I go.

Congrats on scoring the Cuda.  There are many top notch experts on this forum that know far more about restoring these cars than I do.  The only thought I have is on the drivetrain.  Depending on storage space and budget, you might consider setting the original 318 drivetrain aside if you want 350 to 400 hp.  I'm guessing this has a 904 automatic and an 8 1/4" rear end, which weren't designed for that much power.  It will certainly be easier (and possibly cheaper?) to get your horsepower with more displacement, either with a 360 or a big block engine?  Again, I will defer to the experts but just a thought.  In any case, welcome.

Welcome to CC.com and congrats on that great score. Looks like a very nice & do-able project.  :2thumbs: I do tend to agree with MizzouRT concerning the drivetrain. You'll find plenty of proven combo's and write-ups on restoration projects here along with years of experience. Good luck and keep us posted on your car and don't be afraid to ask questions!
