Loose mirror glass, '73 Chally
« on: October 28, 2012 - 04:54:17 PM »
Hello, all (and best wishes to all of us in Hurrican Sandy's path. Sigh)!

The wife and I were really stoked to take our new-to-us '73 out for her maiden voyage theother day and I am making a list of relatively small to medium things to tackle, as time goes forward.

One is the clock (not working) and speedometer (indicator end broken pretty far back, pretty aggravating) but, the one I am hoping may be a easy fix is the mirror glass in the side view mirriors.

Especially the drivers side mirror.  You can move into position but, just the energy poring outta the 440 when sitting still and idling is enough for the mirror to "flop" into a default position.

How does one go about "tightening up" the mirro glass?

Or, am I being even more naive than I suspect I am?

I read once Rick Ehrenberg wrote on Mopar Action:
Use a drop of Super Glue right on the ball pivot. Move it around as it's drying.

Topcat, thanks!   Interesting. I recall an incident in high school biology where one student squeezed super glue around the forearms of another who'd used a lab table to go to sleep in between classes. 30 minutes later when the 'victim' woke up, they had to call the Fire Dept!  I wonder if I could also try blue (medium to low-strength) Loctite and let it dry . . . ?

Just an update; Since my last post, I spoke with a distant relative who (I wasn't previously aware) used to work in the body repair shop of a Chrysler dealership here in Southern MD, back in the 70's.

Anyhoo, we were talking and he said he seemed to remember the mirror having a mirror glass wobble adjustment / tension screw inside it. Would have to remove the mirror to find out if his hunch / memory is correct.

Can anyone substantiate his hunch?

Problem is, with work the way it is, I am only seeing the car for a few hours a week and I use that precious time to drive her!  :burnout:

I am "hoping" (against hope) he's right as the idea of putting any 'fastener' on a part and moving it while the 'fastener' dries doesn't, well, "fascinate" me.

Yes, if you remove the glass, there is a screw that tightens the swivel.  Use a heat gun to loosen the glue holding the mirror, pry it gently, and it MAY pop of without breaking the glass.  you can buy replacement glass if you break it.
