1 week away from engine fire up after 18 years
« on: October 28, 2012 - 05:25:06 PM »
After nearly 18 years of sitting,I will be starting my 340 up next weekend.Waiting for the oil pressure and water temp sending units from Classic Industries. Might be a little loud for the neighbors. Not sure what will be louder, the headers or the Milodon gear drive.I remember my friends telling me they could here the gear drive coming from a block away. The headers had turbo mufflers bolted to them and nothing else. :naughty:
I am a little bit older now so will go with an x-pipe and Flowmaster 40 full exhaust system. As for the gear drive,if it drives me crazy,I will put a timing chain back on the car.

I found a gas station close to my house that sells 100 octane gas for $6.99/gal.Going to go with 8 gallons of premium 91 plus 4 gallons of the 100 fuel.My engine has the stock 10.5 CR though I did go with forged pistons years ago. What does every body think?

First fire up sounds exciting!  You sure have a big gas tank.

I read through that Chryco as I am getting ready for my first fire. You say you don't like pre-oiling to protect the cam lube. Does that mean priming?

If the engine is assembled with Red brg guard it will protect the engine until the oil gets there . if you are going to pre-lube the engine I do not rotate it so the rocker shafts will not get oil but at least this way the cam lube is not wiped off by the lifters before the engine is fired up . keep in mind the cam has no oil feed until it splashes up to the cam off the crank

If this is a new cam please heed what CP says. Get that RPM up to 1800-2000 instantly. So what I did is install an inhose block heater which we turned on a few hours before firing her up. Made the jump to 2000 on a warm engine. Do that every spring - plug her in. Also we removed the inner valve springs for first start then installed them using the compressed air method to hold the valves shut. Tedious but way better than picking bits of metal out of the engine and a cam change.
Welcome back!

Not a roller cam problem. I did look at a pretty cool engine break in stand for $1400 bucks with my machinist. Man it's tempting....

:bigsmile:The engine started right up once the fuel made its way to the carb.I forgot what the Comp Cams .480 lift 280/280 duration sounds like.Perfect.Little loud and smelly. My boys rooms are above the garage. Can not run it too long. Can't push it outside. The driveway slopes down and is short. Also the HOA would have a field day.Time for a full exhaust.

Engine was rebuilt 22 years ago ,less than 750 miles put on it then parked for almost 18 years.Cam should have broke in years ago.it is not a roller.
