wont start..........again
« on: November 06, 2012 - 12:17:21 AM »
So my 73 340 chally wouldnt start sometimes, turn the key and nothing at all.  Replaced my ballast resistor and it started.  Next time i tried to start it it wouldnt start, completely dead.  Put in a new ignition control module and it started.  The next time i tried to start it it was dead, again.  Jumped the started relay and it starts, so i put in a new relay.....still doesnt start, acts completely dead.  WTF?

If you have no or limited power in the car I would check the bulkhead connector and see if the main power leads going through are burned, melted, or have green corrosion on them. Very common on these older Chrysler products.

This is some good info on the problem, I did this with mine.

No start means that the starter motor does not spin from the ignition key but does spin from jumping the starter relay terminals? If so, then I would be looking at neutral safety switch first.  On my Ram Van that has been acting for 3 years no. Some times it does not spin the starter and it works after some furious banging of the gear change lever.

Sure sounds like a bad connection. Every time you move wiring to change a component
it starts right up.  :dunno:
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Both previous statements are accurate, I would start by simply checking for power on the yellow wire at the starter relay when the ignition switch is in the start position, if no power you know there is a poor connection to track down in the harness or switch. Check for ground on the brown wire at the starter relay, if no ground you have a bad connection or issue with the neutral safely switch, you can make a temporary ground to bypass the NSS to help prove/disprove if that's where the problem lay.

Define "nothing at all".

Does the fuel gauge come up and the e-brake light come on when you twist the key?  If not , read on:

I had an intermmitant no start on mine ....tried a bunch of things and then I noticed the gas gauge wasnt coming up......brake lights werent coming on on the dash...ie no power.

Replaced the starter switch, sure that that was it..... and that didnt help.

Turns out that the aftermarket p.o.s. replacement lock tumbler/mechanism was malfunctioning.....and wasnt triggering the starter switch correctly.

Well, replaced the lock assembly with one from a salvaged column sitting in my shed and viola..no problems since.

I have to carry around THREE keys (one ignition, one locks, one trunk) but I am OK with that.  I could get the ignition keyed the same as the door locks but I do not want to mess with it anymore... getting the column apart is not HARD, but its a bit of a PITA.

I had my starter wires come loose off the starter at one point and gave me the same problem. Didnt know it till it was dark and i saw some sparking. May wanna check your wire connections on the starter.

I've been having the same problem with my Challenger since it came back from the trans shop. Found your thread last night while I was looking for something else so I decided to try jumping the NSS to the battery ground. Fired up right away. I'd recommend trying that.

if its not the neutral switch or bulk head connection it could be some weak grounds , there are plenty of areas that need good ground to start the car
