I'll give him 4 months before he racks up another trillion in debt and gets us downgraded again.
That was mostly due to political brinksmanship in congress. Even S&P was clear on that when they downgraded us. They stated it specifically.

The spending and borrowing trajectory is bad, for sure, but the biggest problem wasn't our ability to pay. The biggest problem was intransigent jerks were unwilling to do something that we needed to do in the short term. Add to that the unwillingness to compromise for the long term, and there we have our downgrade.

Pretending that we can just stop raising the debt ceiling as a way to get our financial situation in order is laughable. It's going to require a comprehensive plan and cooperation from most of congress to get it done. The President is little more than a cheerleader in that process.

It's going to have to be like the Simpson-Bowles plan, which draws from all areas, or it isn't a serious plan worthy of consideration.

Dig your heels in and get ready for a rough ride.  My predictions are,  Gas will be at 7 to 8 dollars per gallon,  Electricity costs will nearly triple, unemployement will go to 12% or higher, stock market will fall dramatically. All the tax increases will effect everyone our once proud and strong military will be greatly reduced and demoralized and no end in sight for the downfall of our once proud nation.  The face of the republican party needs a dramatic change in leadership, think about it, when you look at the Rep leaders all you see is white hair and a good ole boy network.  I for one am not looking forward to whats coming down the tracks here and it will be not only 4 more years but with Clinton coming for her run look for 8 to 12 more years of this disaster.

Fiscal cliff?  Bring it on!

We need some serious sacrifice in this country.   Too many frills and no one wants to pay for it.

Tax cuts, huge defense spending, medicare for rich people...

We need EVERYONE's taxes to go up to the era of Clinton so we can start payin' for stuff.  Tax cuts created ZERO jobs.

Sick and tired of how greedy the WW2 and baby boomer generation are in how they want everything but don't want to pay for it.  Want a war?  Put it on the credit card.  Want free drugs for seniors?  Put it on the credit card.  Tax cuts for the rich?   Credit card.

I stand corrected Sen. Harry Reid wants 2.4 trillion raising the debt ceiling to 18.4 trillion  :bricks1:   They'll spend that before Sept.

Interesting bit of trivia. The character played by Tommy Smothers in Martin Scorcese's Casino, the guy who was head of the gaming commission and who conspired to keep Deniro's character from getting his gaming license, that was based on ... Harry Reid.

Civics lession 101:  Budget starts at the House of Reps.

Guess what?  House of Reps are all led by the GOP (John Boner).

So any deficits created since 2011, guess who to blame?

Keeping this civil...

It will be interesting to watch congress to see if they can pass a budget. I just hate how a party will automatically reject any idea the other side has. If we do fall off this fiscal cliff, it will be a rude awakening some/most people. I'm in the defense industry by trade, and our company is already planning layoffs with or without sequestration.

I predict this thread getting locked. It's high time for congress to put aside their party differences and work together to balance the stinking budget!! Eliminate/lower our debt. We are all in this together. United we stand or divided we will fall. Right now we are falling HARD!!  :faint: :faint: :faint:

I figured I was screwed either way being "middle class" (barely  :eek4: ).Obama is spending too much and giving it away to people leaching off the system instead of getting jobs and trying to pay thier own way.Romney has no concept of what it means to be lower class and live paycheck to paycheck and I don`t think he cares about us,after all he has all his rich business cronies to give tax breaks to saying it will "trickle down" which is BS-in my experience the rich pay us as litle as possible and keep as much of the profit as they can.

I agree, and I'm in the same boat.  Surprisingly, we've been busy as ever.  But we have a lot of F22 and F35 (JSF) work and cuts to those programs will cripple our workforce and likely our Air Force as well.

I'll try to keep an open mind with regard to the president.  But he needs to show leadership, not just blaming congress for not acting.

The upside to the sequestered cuts is that the switch flips immediately, but many of the impacts aren't felt until later. The market might freak out in the short term due to the uncertainty, but who in congress isn't going to back a tax cut for the middle class in January? Who would refuse to back a bill to strengthen defense after the cuts? Both Dems and Repubs will have no choice at that point.

If the congress doesn't act now on a balanced solution before the end of the year and the President has the sack to wait and trigger the automatic cuts (I have serious doubts on both), he can get whatever he wants come January. Why? Because congress doesn't want the ramifications of those cuts hung around their neck. It would be a rare instance where their own selfish political interests help facilitate getting something done for a change.

That said, the recovery is fragile, actually rocking the boat too much could shake things up in a bad way. But that doesn't preclude congress from coming up with a sensible ten year plan that doesn't endanger what's been slowly taking root the past four years.

My favorite part of this whole thing is that it's a big self inflicted wound because of the debt ceiling debacle last year. The Republicans threw a fit over raising the debt ceiling and demanded spending cuts. Both sides on the committee couldn't come to an agreement and so this sequestration stuff came into play. The ultimate irony is that the Democrats could end up getting more of what they want out of the deal by going off the "fiscal cliff" and setting the terms in January. They could get taxes on upper income earners, middle class tax cuts and huge cuts in defense spending... and they got to raise the debt ceiling in 2011.

But I doubt it will go that extreme. Regardless, it will be a hilarious couple of months to sit back and watch those jerks squabble.
