New Rod Bolts

I'm putting an engine back together fresh from the machine shop. I didn't think to tell them to put new ARP rod bolts in so I'm getting ready to now.

The instructions say to check the rods again after new bolts are installed which seems a little overkill but what about balance? I had it all balanced .  the ARP's are a little longer. is any of this something to worry about or should I just  put them in and go?

The rods will need to be resized if you put new bolts in. It's SOP. And not worth the risk if not done properly.

 While I agree with using new bolts always  the bolts can shift the cap position & could cause the cap to be out of alignment with the rod & making the engine hard to rotate also the weight may be off slightly as well but I doubt you would feel it . What are you using the engine for ?

Just a street 440 , LY rods.

I guess I could have them resized, but I have no reason to think the original bolts are bad mybe I should just use them.

I guess if you trust your wheel studs after changing tires 100 time why shouldn't you trust a rod bolt that'd been torqued twice.

you could always tap the new bolts in carefully , if your fingernail catches at the parting line . then have the rod resized if not you should be ok .
 what color is the R/T SE ? , 4spd or auto ?

I'll try that. if they do need resized would the pistons have to be pressed off?


My '70 is an original  Bright Red / Black  4spd N code.  it now has a date correct 440 six pack in it.   it was in the forum calander a few years ago, can't remember what year but maybe 2008 or 2009.

They might be able to resize the large end without removing the piston again .
Mine is a 4sp N code as well , the #s block was gone when I bought the car so it also has a 400+6 in it now

The pistons do not need to be removed, but it would make the job easier. Definitely no rings installed though.
