Another 70 'Cuda converible
« on: November 10, 2012 - 09:59:14 AM »

Hello everyone! I'm new to classic Mopar vehicles and have been brought up GM my whole life, been an auto tech for 20 years w experience from all makes and models. Anyhow I'm getting a 70 'Cuda convertible 383 auto, buckets etc. It's yellow with a black top. I will be the 3rd owner of it and it needs some work. My father in law purchased it in 1978 and has had it garages since, driving it on random days when the weather is decent. It had been in a ditch previous to him buying it and appears to have been repainted and some body work to the drivers quarter with some lead. He has also said that he had installed some tin w some roofing cement some years back due to some floor pan holes. (Haven't seen them myself yet). Car looks pretty solid w no major holes in trunk or frame that I can see looking underneath. I assume that it's numbers matching since he got it with around 55,000 miles and never done anything to it really. It has a sticker in the trunk lid from tires being installed then and they are still on the car. Tires and wrong hubcaps will be the first to go anyways. Lol
Sorry for the long read. I'm curious to know what this car is currently worth (I know without good pics, that's not easy) and what this car restored could be worth. My plans are to repaint the original yellow, and probably change the brakes to at least power disc in the front (currently manual drum all around ). Will that harm the value much? I also want to change the wheels to he factory 15" steel wheels w holes or the chrome 5 spoke "road wheels". These are just for now as I will restore it later down the road when funds and time will allow for it. Any help and info would be appreciated very much.

Running, driving, big block vert that isn't a rot box/basket case is definitely worth 30k.  They are rare, with high quality examples bringing a lot of cash.  You should check the trunk, floor pan, cowl for rust as those tend to go first.  Obviously you'll want to check out the frame rails as well, along with the rockers, wheel wells, etc.
Be aware that certain parts are vert specific and not remanufactured, like the rear interior panels.

The interior is mint w no issues that I have seen. The trunk seems solid w no holes visible. I've done minor research on a disc conversion for the front, but nothing solid on what I want to do. I'm not going w a crazy Baer set up and have to run big wheels. I'm trying to keep it as close to original style but with better brakes. Any inexpensive set ups that you know or point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance !

I know Brads70 swapped in C body spindles and Viper calipers:  http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=73985.0

There are also several kits available from vendors.  I don't have any experience with them personally as my 74 came with front discs.

This article covers doing a factory style swap:  http://www.moparmusclemagazine.com/techarticles/suspension/mopp_0408_installing_factory_style_disc_brakes/viewall.html

He actually still drives it. Not anything far but still cruises it around.
I also found out that this car should have the elastomeric front bumper, not the chrome. Any idea where to find one that's not a million dollars?

Sweet vert! I'd say around 30 is right.

Steel wheels would be great, they make a car look so much better imo.

As for the rubber bumper you have 4 options pay a million for original, get lucky and find one cheap, buy a repop which is I think 700-800 Each  :swear: or go with a fiberglass repop.

Haven't seen anyone use it, curious on the quality and thickness.
WANTED 71 cuda / barracuda project. Prefer Black but open.

Got it.stupid cheap, because he knows I will do something with it. It needs actual floor pans since they were just kind of patched a long time ago. I'm at a point where I should really take this thing apart and do a ground up. However I will prob just end up tearing it apart enough to do the floors correctly and get that all lined up correctly which will prob help the doors close smoother. The frame and trunk all look solid from what I can see. I've seen Year One has some quality parts for these, are they worth the money for the floor pans? Or is a diff company better? Thanks for all the info so far, you guys are helping a lot.

Doc,

If you decide to keep this car and restore it either back to original. (what I would do).
If you clone it, keep everything. (please don't)   :2cents:

Doing the disc brake change shouldn't affect value too much. Dog Dish caps are cool!

You are going to be on a mission for a while. These E bodies are a little more challenging to restore than GM's. Don't let that be a deterent. There's 20 F bodies to every one E body everywhere you look. The reward on it done is better than you'll ever imagine.
