Tappet noise
« on: November 16, 2012 - 11:38:45 AM »
I noticed my AAR's 340 making what seems like loud tappet noise.  It is a hydraulic lifter of course, and all stock.  I opened the oil filler cap on the passenger side valve cover, and didn't see any oil sloshing around, but it didn't look dry.  Should there be more oil sloshing around under the valve covers?  BTW, the oil gauge reads normally and the dipstick shows lots of oil sloshing around the pan, is it normal to have noticeable tappet noise with these hydraulic lifter engines?

Does it do it worse upon start up and then taper off, or does it do it all the time? Also, is this a recent development, or has it always done it?

340's have an adjustable valvetrain. Time to adjust the lash.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

I think it may have always done it, I just recently started to get under the hood a lot to start adjusting things (you really can't hear it with the hood down and inside the car when driving), since I am now driving it and not keeping it pristine for shows.  The engine only has 350 miles on it since it was rebuilt (and I put 250 miles of that on it the last month), but that was about 5 years ago, as it has been a rarely driven show car.  I can adjust the lash, any spec place where I can find the gap?

There is no "lash" with a hydraulic cam.

You want to compress the punger in the lifter 1/2 to 1 turn past no clearance.  You have to do this when the valve is fully closed, when the lifter is on the back side of the lobe.

Thanks, insufficient pre-load will cause excessive tappet noise I understand, and I notice some parts of the valve train are noisier than others.  Maybe I should try the COMP-Cam adjustment procedure for this, as described in the cam and lifter installation sheets I have from the rebuild.  You would think the engine shop that installed it all and did the rebuild would know how to do this right.

the quick way to do this is the adjust the exhaust when the intake closes & adjust the intake as the exhaust starts to open , I usually set one then turn the engine 1/4 turn of the crank  & follow the firing order

Just a thought ...

I have had the same type situation arise from not using the correct type of oil.
If you are using an oil without sufficient ZDDP, it can make the tappets sound loud, specially after the engine temperature hits 180+ (oil gets real suppey).

try adding a ZDDP additive to the oil.
I use Rotella 15-40 desiel oil and Lucas ZDDP (engine breakin).

I have never had a loud lifter.

PS ...  did you use the breakin ZDDP oil?   You could have damaged a cam lobe if not.

Yes, it has Rotella diesel with a ZDDP additive.

In trying to isolate the sound, it seems to be the front half of the passenger side, and I also notice the exhaust "puff" force on that side is weaker than the driver's side exhaust, so maybe it is an exhaust vale or two that are too loose and need tightening.  Would it work to wiggle all the rockers and see which ones have the most "play"?  I am assuming you are only going to tighten then 1/4 to 1/2 turn of the nut anyway.

If you want to find the guilty one, you can remove the valve covers, start the engine and feel each rocker.  It's easy to find each on by feel, but this does make an oily mess, just don't rev it up, it will be a really oily mess.

After some tries at diagnosing the noise, without success, I took it to a mechanic and it seems the entire rocker shaft has not been getting enough oil and is now worn and all needs to be replaced.  This is very disappointing, as the engine was totally rebuilt 350 miles ago.

Make sure they check the oil passage from the cam to confirm it is oiling (run the oil pump with a drill while cranking the engine over - the oil holes only line up while the cam is in one position). Hopefully it is - if not, it may be indicative of more problems

It seems just the front 1/3 or so of the rocker shaft was without oil, still looking for that cause but now need to replace the shaft and some rockers and pushrods, any suggestions for a vendor?  It is a stock configuration.

As mentioned 340's oil the top end through the block into the heads and you want to make sure, as also mentioned, that you're getting that oil to the top end. A plugged passage or improperly spec'd or installed head gasket might be the problem as it could block said passage and cause the poi starvation you're now dealing with.  :2cents:
