wiring in a voltage regulator from scratch
« on: November 17, 2012 - 07:57:15 PM »
i installed a complete wiring kit from american autowire. this kit is set up for a one wire alternator wich i have found out is a bad idea. i think i understand how to wire in the voltage regulator but my questions are, where is the best spot to hook the vr to '' sense the load '' and what is the easiest way to wire in a battery cut off when i do this?

using a 3 wire factory alt & a factory reg ?
 the factory reg needs 12v switched power as does 1 field terminal usually blue wire  , the second field goes back to the green wire at the reg .

Yes factory 3 wire alt and factory reg. does it matter what switched wire ? Should it be the ignition wire to coil or can I just use one of the spares under the dash?

either as long as there is no resister in the line to the coil to drop voltage

ok, thanks chryco. i'm going to mount the reg under the dash and use the ignitioned candelbra. when i wire the cutoff switch does it have to be the ignition wire that the relay is wired to or does it matter wich one?

makes sense to wire into the tri plug but I cannot figure out where you want to put the relay ?

i'm hooking up a battery disconnect/engine kill. when you wired this for me a few years ago you used a relay and tapped into one of the reg wires, i'm just wondering if it matters wich one.

not really but there will be less load on the green wire back to the reg

ok, i got something backwards. i wired up my regulator and i'm getting 36 volts, luckily i know my wiring abilities so i checked it before hooking the alt to the battery. this is how i wired it- i ran the green wire from my regulator to fied on the alt. i ran the blue wire to the other field and also to the +side of the coil.  what did i do wrong?

The only wire on the "+" side of the coil comes from the ballast resistor.

I don't have a ballast resistor. The only reason I used the coil is it is the closest keyed power source

blue 12v feed to the alt field , the blue wire at the reg & coil
green wire to second alt field terminal & green wire at reg
