So what do you do to support your hobby?
« on: November 18, 2012 - 08:37:59 AM »
I think there was a post similar to this some time ago, but it's been a while, so I thought I'd bring it up again so some of the newer members can chime in. So what do you do for a living?? We all have to do something to support our hobby/habit!!  :smilielol: I'll start. I started my career over 30 years ago in the ship repair industry. I started as an apprentice marine machinist for the US Navy. I still work for the navy, but now work in the test engineering division. I do shipboard testing and get to "blow stuff up". That's not the desired outcome, but I've had it happen.  :scared: It's a lot of fun sometimes! So tell us what you do!!  :dunno:

Wow, you guys have set the bar pretty high! I was a lowly mechanic for HL&P (the electrical company) in Houston. They did a mass layoff, and turned into ENRON. We all know how that turned out. I migrated back up north and now drive trains.
{oo/-------\oo} In '69 I was twenty-one and I called the road my own. I don't know when that road turned into the road I'm on. Jackson Browne

I'm a Deputy Sheriff Captain with 25.5 years in the Wash., DC Metro region. But technically, that's not really how I 'paid for' my "MISCHF"    Rather, I invested in healthcare stocks approx. 10 years ago and simply made myself forget about 'em.  Until my original investment doubled, that is. Skimmed off the dividends, left the capital in place and I start all over again!   (NOTE: My profession is how I am paying for the gas she gulps, though!   :scared:  )

I work at a lime quarry/plant as a lead maintenance mechanic working on the equipment needed to turn limestone into lime.Cooking the rock in a rotary kiln at 2000 degrees gets rid of the CO2,turning it into lime.
Half my overtime net pay goes to my Challenger fund.

I started out my career as a test pilot and also conducted maintenance flights.  I currently work for a major airline.  As well as spending several years earning degrees in college, I hold just about every certificate that the FAA issues.
