I'm union. I don't get breaks. I don't get a lunch break. My company can work me for 12 hours. if there is adverse weather conditions or unforseen circumstances, it can be for much, very much longer. These factory workers would shat their pants, if they had to put up with the conditions that I do. If I were to get high or drunk, I would HOPE and PRAY that my coworkers would turn me in. I would do the same for them. I don't get holidays. I don't get sick days. If I don't work, I don't get paid. I'm on call 24/7. Yeah. I'm UNION. I put in more hours in two trips than what these bozos put in a month. I get sick and tired of people busting union ass when they don't know the circumstance behind every job. I can't leave my position. I'm captive. I DON"T GET BREAKS or LUNCH. OR HOLIDAYS, OR SICKDAYS! And YES it's a Union job. Chew on that. I don't work - I don't make any money. 24/7. QUIT telling me how unions are destroying America. Sometimes unions are absolutely neccesary. (sorry bad sp)

Sorry, have to ad my  :2cents: here, they did in fact years ago make low fat Twinkies.  They weren't bad.  Only found them in the thrift shops, not on the supermarket shelves.  I used to visit the thrift shop a lot during my work route.

I did my part to support Hostess... burp....

Yes, it is sad so many will be losing their jobs...   :-\

With Hostess gone, how many junk food junkies are jonsin for a Twinkie, Ho Ho or Ding Dongs now?

A couple of those with a glass of milk sound good right now. mmmm!

Ok I am self employed I dont get a break ,usually always work through lunch, and no paid vacation or sick days

btw,jee it seems we have the same situation so what is the use for a union if they dont give the same rights as other workers in union jobs sounds to me like you should abolish your union and get the rights that the non union jobs offer 1 hour break in an 8 hour day, paid sick leaves and paid vacation(with out having a portion of their pay going to a union boss).....I mean really I thought unions were aroound to protect the exact kind of conditions you are now going through.....................just reading what you wrote, you should petition your Union bosss to get the rights you deserve :2cents:

If you dont like it...find another job. If you hold this job because it pays a LOT of money so you put up with the lack of any benefits, then you have nothing to complain about...you're being compensated well for it. Otherwise, your union STINKS!

I feel the unions havent ruined this country,  but they have outlived much of their usefulness. Now, most union jobs are government workers, where they shouldnt be necessary in the first place!! But, I do feel that private sector unions did in the past contribute to our massive loss in manufacturing jobs. They did some good early on, no doubt, but eventually they got the upper hand...things got out of hand, and most jobs eventually disappeared or moved off shore.

Costs, costs ,costs in today's ever competetive market a low production cost is the key to a succesful business and profit margin. If labor costs are too high and cuts are not able to be made you can kiss that business, company, or industry goodbye. Unions make it difficult to cut costs root out poor performance workers and have a poor reputation of being in bed with leftist politicking. In an age where million and billion dollar industries dry up overnight there is no time to take important business descisions to comitee.

Back in late 1999 I was working for a local sheet metal duct shop and went without a raise for over 2 years my pay was no where near being maxed out either by the way. I already had 3 years time spent with this company at this point. So when I finally worked up the courage to approach my tyrant of a boss and ask for a modest raise. I was told I don`t give out raises based on how long you have been with me, I give them out based on how much you are worth to me. Well I said to myself I already make your ductwork, go to the jobs and measure and install your ductwork and was starting to do service work for him as well. Whats left to do for this guy suck his ......!!! I also was needing my vacation time as well for the first week of June since I was getting married and needed the time for a honeymoon. This request was met with "Gee, good thing I don`t run a sheet metal shop and have to install central AC in customers homes in the summer!" When I explained I needed the time for a trip I was taking for my honeymoon. I was told I may not have a job when I come back!

Within days of these conversations I soon left this company and got myself into the Sheet Metal Workers Union... AND I HAVE NEVER LOOKED BACK!

Yes times are tough! In fact they are pretty tough right now for me! However not as tuff as back then for me when I was working steady for this prick trying to support me and my family and not getting by!
So when I hear people say we don`t need Unions I know this to be untrue! This guy didn`t value me or my hard work I gave him! I took my skills and work ethic down the road and became his compettion. In three or four years since that time he sold his companys assets off little by little, moved out of the nice shop we had into an old dilapidated mill building. Then sold the business  basically tearing all the meat out of this company and selling the bones!
Just like Gumby I do not get paid holidays, sick days, or vacations in short if I don`t work I don`t get paid! I`m not complaining and I don`t think Gumby was complaining about his job either he`s just pointing what he has to deal with to put bread on his table and that not all Union workers are lazy and looking for something for nothing. I know first hand I work harder as a Union member if I don`t I wont have a job for long. All we want is a fair living wage, a fair days pay for a fair days work!

I have been on both sides of the table union vs non-union in my work. I know I am treated better as a Union member, and more is expected of me as one!

Well said Barracudadan!  :2thumbs:
Without unions you will be driven down to the lowest common denominator. In today's world that is a bowl of rice per day.

Can you find examples of union workers abusing the system? Sure. Doesn't mean all union workers are lazy.
Can you find CEO's abusing the system? Sure. Doesn't mean all CEO's are horrible.

Unions only formed because companies took advantage of employees.

You could have the same argument and justification for the 2nd ammendmant!

Devils advocate: Unions are outdated dinosaurs , EO laws protect the employee.

2nd ammendmant: Guns are not needed we are civilized now and people running the governmtent would never take advantage of us again.  ::)

see the comparison

Barracudadan, you hit the nail on the head. I am NOT complaining. I actually LOVE my job, and I could not see ever doing anything else. I really try and give 110% whenever I can. Just one trip alone, started on a Sat at 7:30 am , ended on Mon at 10:30 am. 51 hours away from home. ONE trip, and I still have the rest of the 2 weeks to go. lol. Yes, I get compensated well. In fact, many people biotch and moan about how much I get paid. Fact is, they would not put up with it for one second. I have missed many birthdays, weddings, football, wrestling, basketball events, and even funerals. I put in more hours away from home on one trip, than most people work in a week. Like everything else in life, it is a trade off. But it is a lifestyle, being on the road, that never gets old. Different people every trip. (that is a huge bonus). That said, when a person has pay discrepencys (bad SP) or any other problem, the Union is ready to help out. It is extremely hard to keep up with issues that might arise when you are away from home and don't have computer access. For years, I worked 3 pm to 11 pm. I was talking to a coworker one day, and he told me that his son was graduating, and he didn't even know him or get to see the kid grow up. Every day he would go to work when the kid was coming home from school. Every night, he would get home and the kid was in bed. On weekends, the kid was with his friends. All of a sudden, the kid is 18 and graduating. THAT is sad.

EO laws would protect the employee if violated the employee EO law then get a lawyer sue for money win. Laws can work here.

Restrict guns and criminals still get em government still abuses eventually infringing on 1st ammend also. Laws don't work here.
