Moldings? Best dealer to buy them from?
« on: November 20, 2012 - 07:18:53 AM »
Hi all! I am going to replace some of my moulding trim over the winter, can any of you recommend a good dealer? Price will not be the only factor, quality is of very high importance. Also, how about luggage racks? Mine has some pitting, and I have talked to two different local shops and both said I would have more in sending mine away to be replated than just buying a new one. Thanks for any and all responses.

Thx fellows I will give him a shout. I've been all over the net and have found everything, but prices vary a lot. I know cheaper means "cheaper" in a lot of cases, but no need to spend more than needed. I'm gonna be replacing my wheel lip moldings, door top moldings, quarter belt moldings and luggage rack.

If it is 'Cuda wheel lip moldings I asked a parts vender last summer who specializes in E-body stuff, which ones fit correctly...  his answer was (for the 'Cuda) "none of them".  At $300 + a set for the supposed good ones that is pretty sad.  Anyone find moldings that don't need re-work to conform to the lips?

I agree Dave at Roseville! I did buy my wheel moldings from Dales Cuda show at Carlisle one year. They fit fine, just the screw holes were out of place in a few spots?

On a Challenger, you work from the middle of the trim piece and work your way out each end. It wasn't bad at all, but like Brad said, a few holes had to be elongated to work.

I have NO clue how the Cuda pieces work.   :dunno:

I've been told not very well, they don't follow the "curves" right.

I too have only heard the stories about wheel well trim. Dale's is always at the top in respect
to best fit. Don't really know what means about the quality though.
If I cant fix it, it's broke

Just an update for my original post: I bought wheel lip moldings from year one and they fit like crap. My body guy had to use a stretcher to get them to contour with the opening which left some teeth marks for me to polish out  :pullinghair:. And as for the luggage rack, my quest continues. I bought a nos piece from Laysons thinking this was the fix, very pricey! However, when I arrived it was not right. Original racks contour with the curve of the deck lid and this one was flat and for that reason the holes would not line up. Laysons took the rack back with a full refund since Dave also thought it was a genuine nos piece, very good people to work with! So I guess I'm stuck with sending it off for re-plating. Anyhow, I hope this info is helpful.

The best fits, are ether NOS  (good luck with that)  or used ones.  Try TONYS parts:   They will take the time to talk with you and either take what you need off thier parts cars, or off the shelf.   I needed a vynil top moulding set for my 71  (NO-ONE makes them repo), and I got a complete original/used set for about $200.  They were not dented, just needed a polish:  I was VERY happy

Tons asked the right questins, and will take the time to help you out

My opinion....
Wheel Lip moldings = Dale's Cuda shop
Belt Moldings = Metro
Gradnd Coupe tail panel moldings = Metro
Cuda tail panel = PG Classic
Luggage Rack = PG Classic

I've restored a few Cudas in my time.

So far that is what I am seeing too for the 'Cuda lip moldings, none of the re-ops follow the contours of the wheel openings where they angle down and inward.  The re-op moldings make a gradual curve to the bottom, while the fenders have a definite "bend" at the lower portion.  Not sure why the manufactures don't see that.   :screwy:

I was at a show last month where a long time Mopar parts vendor (Hoffman's) swore to me a set he was selling would fit correctly.  You could see they would not, but when I tried to explain it to him he got all huffy and authoritative about it, so I walked.  No point in arguing with the expert  :banghead:

If your fenders and 1/4's are original and NOT full of bondo, then the Dales Cuda Shop moldings should fit. Yes they may require a little tweaking, but so do NOS ones :2cents:
