So this is the part where everyone hates me for not painting my car.  Sorry dudes.  I'm broke and I'm gonna start driving this beast.  I'll worry about painting the outside later.  Until then...

I'm about to start the car up in the next couple days and i've got a few questions.

1.  What paint finish I should have on my air cleaner?  The air cleaner i've got appears to be original and looks to have a semi-gloss or gloss black finish, but i've also seen the wrinkle finish on air cleaners and it looks pretty nice. What's factory for this/preferred?

2. What sticker is my air cleaner supposed to have on it?  I would guess the 383 magnum orange and black sticker, but i've seen some with super commando 383 on them and I really don't know the difference to be honest.  An old guy was telling me today that the magnum meant the 383 had 440 heads?  I always thought magnum just meant 4 barrel carb  :clueless:

3.  I've got too much space between my fan and the shroud and it looks like I need a spacer in between the pulley and the fan and i'm wondering if this is normal/stock, what the proper spacer is (like 2", 3"???), and where i can pick one up.  I checked the normal o'reilly and there are a few versions.

4.  On the carburetor, passenger side at the back of the carb near the right rear bolt hole there's a vacuum line and i'm wondering where or if I hook it up.  Can't find anything on this in my manuals.

5.  Carburetor bolts?  I've been hunting around for what to do and the info i've come up with is that mopars don't use carb studs because a cast iron block doesn't need them, so i'm having a bit of trouble figuring out exactly which bolts are proper to use.  Also, when the engine was dyno'd it got about 9 more horsepower with a 1" spacer below the carb (they said because of heat transfer).  My plan was to use a thick 1/4"ish black paper felpro spacer/gasket to accomplish this.  That would mean longer bolts.  Ideas/resources?

Thanks guys!!!!  With any luck i'll fire this thing up in the next couple days here!

Oh yeah, and one final question.  Does anyone use Rotella 15w40 in their car?  I know it's subjective, but what do most guys use for oil?  I've heard the rotella is the closest to what they would've had back then...

The believe the air cleaner should be black. I pulled these from ebay from a 71 Cuda 383 Convertible. The texture looks a little off to me but it is the best I could find. I've owned mostly 340 cars but I think this is correct. I'm sure Alan will chime in eventually to confirm.

2. Please someone correct me if I am wrong but to my knowledge Dodge used the word "magnum" to describe their 4 barrel engines where as Plymouth called theirs the "super commando."

There were also red/orange pie tins.  Pretty sure you want the orange one cause the red was used in the late 60's only.

4. I have to check my car but that vacuum line could be for the air cleaner assembly.

Keep us posted and good luck with the fire up  :2thumbs: :ylsuper:

IT'S ALIVE!!!!

1971 Cuda startup

Got it running on New years eve.  for now i've just got that vacuum line plugged.  Sounds WAY deeper and more throaty than I could've ever imagined.  Feels really really amazing to get this engine back where it belongs and hasn't been for 40 years-ish...

Congratulations!   :woohoo:

You've come a hell of a long way in a short time and it must feel great!

I don't know the answers to your other questions, but I use Valvoline VR1 Racing oil...  I usually get it by the case from Amazon...  :)

Enjoy!

Love the sound and the way she fired right up on the first turn.  Idles real nice.   :burnout:
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realize it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

So I pretty much finished the car enough to drive it.  Got a couple odds and ends to fix before the trip to california, like an oil leak that could be the pan or the rear main seal, but I dyno'd the engine and we specifically checked the rear main and it was good, so...?  (crossing my fingers)  Alignment is coming up wednesday, then i'm on the road.  The car's obviously not finished, but i'm pretty darn happy with where it's at after only 6 months of work.

Yes!  I'm driving this b**** to California!  My father and I are gonna take the drive together. He'd like to hit some of Route 66 on the way.  We'll also stop in Dallas and Vegas.  Should be a fun trip!

Glad you guys like the car!  I happen to really like it beat up the way it is, even though i'll definitely paint it eventually.  First I gotta pay off what i've spend so far  :cooldancing:
