Rebuilt my shifter mechanism last night because it didn't move well and seemed to be filled up with kitty litter.  When I finished I started looking at it a bit more and questioned how my shifter actually bolts into this thing.  For anyone curious, the parts are arranged in order of removal in the picture starting at the bottom.

That looks like a 1970 Style slip in shifter box it won't bolt to a 71 style shifter handle. You need either a 70 style handle or a 71-74 style shifter box.

Ok cool thanks.  I haven't looked yet, but I think it's possible maybe that the guy put a hurst t-handle into it and that the slip in part might slip out and allow for bolting in the original...  gonna check here tomorrow, hopefully I get lucky.  If not I might try to transplant the bolt in style thing from the hurst super shifter i've got.  I talked with the original owner of the car yesterday and he told me that installing the hurst super-shifter was why he had to cut the shifter tunnel up.

The original owner of the car also told me that he raced my car with 4.56 gears in it and without changing the gear in the tranny, so in his words "Whatever it says on the odometer, like 50,000 miles, that's waaayyy off.  It's probably more like 20.  I used to do burnouts and race with that thing the way it was and the speedometer would be pegged.  I'd drive around town going 30 and it'd say I was going 70."

Cool info I thought.  He also confirmed that my rear end was out of a 69 hemi road runner and that the gear ring and pinion (not the whole rear end) were what he had taken out of a pickup truck in the junk yard.  What a cool experience it is to build my car, wonder what happened, then be able to actually know because i'm in contact with the original owner and second owner (his friend) on Facebook and on the phone.

in the past I have bored a hole through the top & slid the bolt in handles in & secured them with a single crossbolt

Put some more stuff together last night.  Not sure i've got my shifter all hooked up correctly, but I couldn't resist seeing what it will look like.  Manifold studs are in and manifolds are ready to go on tonight.  Might even set the engine in tonight!

Those are some crazy aftermarket looking shifter rods  :o ....infinite adjustment for sure !

You'll have to remove the shifter rods before installing the engine. They go above the transmission crossmember :2cents:

The 1-2, 3-4 rods look like they will obviously work, but they are not factory original . Reverse looks original.

What's with the chimmy chonga alternator pulley ? :eek7:

You don't like my pulley!?!  Jeez, I thought it looked great

Actually I have no clue what someone would need a huge pulley like that for, but i've got the original small one that'll be on there.  I do think i'll look up that new alternators number though just to check the specifications out on it cause that alternator came with the car and I know nothing about it other than that.

In other news...

For the first time since 1976, the original 383 engine is installed in the car!

Actually, yesterday we put the k-member in my 71 last night and took the k-member out of my friend Steve's 1971 cuda 440-6 curious yellow promo car, so it was a one k member in, one out day.  A good day i'd say  :2thumbs:
