The odds of winning last weekend's biggest ever $650 million Mega Millions jackpot were about 1 in 176 million. The odds of of being struck by lightning are greater -- 1 in 750,000, depending on location. A guy in Wichita, Kansas, learned this basic gambling lesson when he was struck by lightning shortly after buying lottery tickets.
On Thursday, Bill Isles, 48, bought three lottery tickets and told a friend, "I've got a better chance of getting struck by lightning," according to Reuters.
Isles, a volunteer weather spotter for the National Weather Service was in his backyard checking for storm activity when he saw a flash, heard a boom and was thrown to the ground. "It kind of scrambled my brain and gave me an irregular heartbeat," he told Reuters.
The next day Isles bought 10 more lottery tickets. But lightning didn't strike twice.
I have not bought a lottery ticket in years. I bought a single ticket yesterday. It may be 1 in 176 million chances to win but my chances are zero if I don't play.
I figure three bucks spent in fun is ok. The problem is when people spend their money on the lottery and don't pay their bills.
