Mustang Wheels?
« on: November 28, 2012 - 10:06:08 PM »
I have seen some people on here using the Mustang Bullit wheels and similar ones.  Would the FR 500's fit?  They make replica ones on ebay for really cheap and in many different sizes.  I have the Hotckis TVS and Dr. Diff 4 wheel disc kit (13's front/11" rear).  Any advise on what offset to get?  I want to run 18's on all four corners or 18's/20's.
Thanks!

When looking to use Mustang wheels, the centre bore diameter is often the restricting factor. Most mustang wheels have a centre bore that is too small for an e-body. You need 72mm i think for our cars. A lot of mustang wheels are somewhere in the sixty something millimetres.

I run 17x9" rims with 275/40/17's all the way around, using a 5" backspace. Now that I'm running a little more negative camber, I've got no rubbing issues anywhere. Prior to cranking up my camber to -0.9, I was rubbing a little on the right front fender lip.

Here's the thing though. 18" rims mean that the tie rod end actually fits inside the rim, so you can run more backspace because the tie rod end is usually the primary limiting factor. With the 17's I was pretty much limited to 5", MAYBE 5.125", which would have been better, but would put me right on the tie rod ends.

Still, with a 9" rim I would say around 5.25" of backspace would be ideal, more than that and you might start to get issues with tires rubbing on the frame at full lock. Depending on tire size of course, but it looks like the FR500's are mostly 9" wide, so 255-275 is where you'd be anyway. Check with Dr. Diff, those brakes may increase your track width a bit, I've heard of some adding as much as a 1/4" per side. That's actually a good thing, since it would let you run an additional 1/4" of backspace.

The center bore can be smaller on the true mustang rims, most of the aftermarket rims have larger bores. And if you're running aftermarket brakes that may not be a concern anyway. Since the FR500's I've seen are in the 6" backspace range, you could probably just run a set of hubcentric spacers anyway, most of those are 1/4" to 3/8" wide, which would probably get you in the ballpark with a 6" backspace rim and a 1/4" wider track with the aftermarket brakes.

In the rear it depends on whether or not you're stock. As I mentioned, I run the same 17x9's with 5" backspace in the back with a TON of room for bigger. But I've got 1" offset spring hangers and a B body rear. If you've got the stock E-body rear and stock width springs, you won't be able to go to a 9" rim with much more than 5" of backspace without spacers. A 1" offset kit would probably clear you for larger though, and with the longer E body rear that 1" of space per side could go directly into the additional backspacing- which again should out you in the ballpark for the FR500's.

I have very similar plans, hotchkis, and brakes, the hotchkis T/A has 18x9.5's in the back with 295's, there is some major spacing tho, couldnt get a straight answer from hotchkis about the backspacing, nobody seemed to know when i called, might try asking forgeline since they supplied the wheels.  I would love to see some pics of your car!

The newer Mustang rims 2005 up, have huge offset, like 7".
Check out how much these 6" offset rims stick out compared to the stock rims.

Here's my set-up

Rims are American Racing Torq-Thrust
ARE-105MS7865B
ARE-105MS8965B

Dr Diff 1" relocation kit gives me about 1" clearance from tire to leaf spring on each side.

17x8 (4.5" BS) up frt - 17/225/50 (25.9") $115 each  *** These have a larger hub that fit as is.
18x9 (6" BS) in rear - 18/275/40 (26.7") $135 each  *** I did have to enlarge (grind) the hub to fit the rear.

I looked at the 285's for the rear but it was almost $100 more per tire. I looked for common sizes to keep the cost down.

I have the 17 x 10.5" Am Racing Torque Thrust M wheels with the 6 5/8" backspace in the rear, but I also have 1.5" offset hangers. No spacers. I use 9" wide wheels in the front with 6" backspacing but also have 25mm spacers installed.

The Hotchkis E max Challenger has been in several magazines and nobody puts the wheel information in the articles.  I am on the verge of ordering $3800 custom wheels since my car is about to be a roller.  I have the Hotchkis TVS with the Detroit Speed  relocation kit.  Therefore, my springs are not a clearance issue and I can take advantage of the full wheel tubs on both sides.  I like the look and price of the FR 500's.  They look like custom wheels since they are not commonly seen on a Challenger.  Those Dr. Diff brakes seem to be the only confusing part since I don't know how much offset they will require.  I might just order the ebay replica FR500's with the 6" offset for the back and see what kind of fitment I get.  Black chrome would look nice!

FR500's seem to have a hub bore of 70.5mm. Stock e-body rotors are 72mm. At worst, you will have to mount the wheels on a lathe and open up the hub a bit.

He's got 13" rotors on the front and 11" on the back. I don't think he has to worry about stock e body rotors...

The spring relocation parts are for a '69 Camaro.  However, the tech guys at Detroit Speed asked for some measurements and I put my shop in touch with them.  They confirmed that the parts should work the same on the Challenger.
