833 rebuild book
« on: November 30, 2012 - 07:21:28 AM »
I have an 833 sitting in my garage with broken bosses for the shifter and thought it might be interesting to pull it apart and see how it's put together. The 833 that's  going in the Cuda has been sitting for a while so could probably use a freshen up as well. Is there a good book with step by step instructions on how to rebuild the 833  out there?
1972 Cuda 340 4 barrel 4 speed that looks like a 71
2006 Dodge Charger R/T Daytona
2005 Dodge Ram 2500 Diesel 4X4
2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser Convertible (Kidmobile)
1972 Dodge Charger 318 auto
1970 Challenger 440/727 auto
1973 Plymouth Duster 340/auto (Making it Panther Pink for the wife)
2006 Honda Civic Hybrid (It doesn't save gas, it just diverts it to the Cuda/Challenger)
In desperate need of more property for my growing Mopar family

The factory service manual
you will need 3 tools , a large pin type snap ring tool , a tapered end flat snap ring tool & a dowel so you can pack 72 roller brgs in the countershaft & hold them in place while you slide the countershaft into the case , I bought the factory tool & made a spare from  a worn counter shaft , this dowel will need to be very close to the same diameter to work & exactly the length inside the case so the thrust washers will stay in place as you load the countershaft into the case . The OD version of the 833 is more difficult to build , there are a few tricks & a specific order that things go together to assemble the OD . I have heard of people doing this using heater hose for a dowel but it would not be easy to do .

I should have been more diligent about taking pix when I rebuilt the dozens I have done , the problem is you are covered in gear oil grease & silicone , last thing you want to touch is a camera !

Yeah...thats how my garage camera came about. After touching it once while working on the car my wife needed a new one and that became the garage one.  a lot of things become mine that way. Its like the kid licking food on someone elses plate  :roflsmiley:

I'm going to build myself a bench with a drain at one end before I start the teardown but it will either be in December or January. Now that the idea is in my head it could happen anytime.

I picked up a used 833 i've been thinking of rebuilding to swap in a Passon OD gear set.  Pretty sure i've asked about manual's before and was told just go for it and ask questions as they come up.
I haven't opened it up yet though.

it is easy for the most part , loading the countershaft & getting the tailhousing & mainshaft back on the case of an OD is the toughest parts

rebuilding a 833 is fairly straight forward - The three tools are NEEDED -  not recommended.

I meant to take a few pics when I did 3 of them last year -  just never remembered to.

1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye - 340 / Auto
