Hydraulic Roller Question
« on: December 02, 2012 - 11:57:27 PM »
Hi All,

I am deciding on pulling the 440 and stroking it. My goal is to keep the 6-pack intake and want to stay with hydraulic lifters. My question is can I get in the 650 hp range without going to a solid roller cam?

I'm sure everyone's first question is 'what heads are you using?'

650 Gross HP ?
Yes easily , we built a 440 using stock 915 closed chamber iron heads ported & a solid flat tappet cam , nothing radical & dynoed at 400 HP at the tires which is 640 HP gross rating , completely drivable , no stalling at lights etc .
I also did a 70 real 440+6 shaker 4 spd Cuda  it look bone stock from the outside , same combo inside , it is a monster , my friend who also builds cars drove it & said it was one of the fastest cars he has ever driven , it is in Calgary area also
. If I was still in Calgary I would help you build it !

Thanks for the reply. I would like to build something with a hydraulic roller and aluminum heads of some sort in the 11 to one compression ratio range. Like to keep the 6pack intake. Every engine builder I have talked to reccommends going with a solid roller cam.

Onebadfish, you may want to re-consider that 11:1 cr, because unless you've got an airplane, it'll be tough to get gas for it in this day and age, let alone price. Your final choice of cam will make a difference between your static and dynamic cr's and CP has a good handle on that stuff, but generally, a static ratio of 9.5-10:1 is easier to live with. Running a roller will let you go pretty much anywhere you want to go cam-wise, but they'll be aftermarket and a lot more $ than a flat tappet. Your car, your call. Just my  :2cents:
