What's up with the MOD TOP?
« on: December 04, 2012 - 08:28:01 AM »
OK, guys, I need some experts here.  I have been kicking around the idea of doing a Mod Top car.  I know a little but I have some questions.

What years and for how long where they offered?

What cars came with mod tops?  E-bodies?

What where all the colors and print styles?

Throw me all the info you guys can come up with.  I need ideas!

Thanks,

In one of the Mopar mags they has a Daytona Charger with a mod top that was being restored. There is a guy that lives close to me with a green Dart ( I think its a Dart) that has a Mod top. He is often at Carlisle with it.

The correct answers are:

1969 Barracuda - Yellow Mod Top offered the entire year.
1969 Satellite - Blue Mod Top offered the entire year.

1970 Barracuda/Cuda - Both Yellow and Blue Mod Tops. I believe they were available all year but they are rare.

Those are the only Mod Tops.

Dodge did offer a Floral print as a spring option on 1969 Coronets (including Super Bees) and Darts. It was Green but it is not a Mod Top.

All other prints like the paisley stuff offered on Furys are not Mod Tops.

Several companies offered colorful print vinyl tops to be installed by dealers. The Daytona mentioned is not a factory Floral Top.

That site has some cool stuff on there but just so you know some of the cars listed may be "modified".

Mod tops are neat because they are so different.

I just think I would get tired of it after a few days.     :dunno:

Mod Tops are not for everybody and not my first choice (missed the Powerball so still no fleet of cool muscle cars the 40 acre air conditioned garage / shop / warehouse!).  But can't beat them for originality and standing out in a crowd.

I stand corrected even though I was close !! meaning the green satellite / R R  with the green Mod top I have pictures of is not original or a "mod Top" even being 70 LOL

Read an article in Mopar Collectors on mod tops.

Was Plymouths answer to the hippies "Flower power" motif. Flower patterns were big on everything womans purses, cloths etc. What Chrysler didn't take into account was the fact that "flower children" weren't a large enough demographic to make much impact on car sales. People with the funds for a new vehicle weren't interested in having it decked out in flowers. The mod top promotion was a huge flop. It was discontinued before 1970 model production began. But the article said it could be special ordered in 1970 due to all the excess material produced. Article says there are only four 1970 mod top Cuda and Barracuda's known to exist, 3 in yellow and 1 in blue.

These statements from MCG are not correct. The Cuda/Barracudas were not special ordered. The tops are clearly shown in the color and trim selectors. It's possible that they only know of those few cars, but there are more known than that. But they are very rare.

Simply green floral. They were going to offer it on 1970 Darts and Challengers but changed their mind before the model year started.
