Reply to Beck: Road Trip Video - Katy, Texas
« on: December 04, 2012 - 06:22:34 PM »
I thoroughly enjoyed Beck's road trip video of New Zealand.  Beautiful coastal roads, mountains, and plenty of narrow, twisting roads.  In contrast, I live in Katy, Texas which is "topographically challenged" in comparison to NZ.  An inland coastal plain, the Katy area is as flat as a pool table.  However, in areas where the encroaching suburbs of Houston have not arrived yet, the flat fields offer a wide vista, which I've featured in this video.

Once a rural farming community located on the MKT railroad (hence the name "Katy"), Katy now has mailing addresses for over 500,000 people as the suburbs move westward from Houston.

Items of interest in the video:

0:10 "stub out" where a developer has built a road out into a field to extend the Firethorne subdivision westward
0:24 mix of undeveloped farm land with new developments
0:46 "Old Katy" is unchanged, with the white grain elevator as the most prominent landmark
0:55 Downtown Katy
0:59 US-90 branches off from I-10 and is the main arterial road in Katy.  This was the main east-west route leading to Houston prior to construction of I-10.
1:24 Katy Freeway (I-10) and Grand Parkway (TX 99) interchange under construction just east of Katy
1:32 From the west I-10 to south TX 99 flyover, looking back to the east along the Katy Freeway.  The Houston skyline is visible on the horizon 25 miles to the east.  No hills in any direction.
1:35 Formerly a main line of the MKT (Missouri-Kansas-Texas) the railroad is now just a spur and owned by Union Pacific.
1:39 Katy has a subtropical climate, so palm trees are a frequent sight.
2:31 US-90 just west of Katy is a two-lane blacktop road.  A few miles to the west, US-90 rejoins I-10.

Same here, I have a clear preference for the up-tempo, more driven version by the Bangles over the original by Simon & Garfunkel.  (And I would much rather have Susanna Hoffs along for the ride!)

I am glad Dutch is planning on a road trip video from the Netherlands, already looking forward to that.

Well done!  I love the editing and video effects.  Very clear audio...

Inspires me to do something similar some day.   What gear did you use (video and editor)?

That was very cool.  It is nice to see other parts of the country/world.  I will have to find out how to put one together over the winter and then have fun in the Spring trying it out.

Camera: GoPro Hero2 (Motorsports edition).  This camera is inexpensive (complete gear with mounts, USB cable + memory card under $300 at Amazon).  The GoPro 2 deserves all the lavish praise it has received from both users and reviewers.  Incredible bang for the buck.  The stabilization software is unmatched in this price range.

http://www.amazon.com/GoPro-CHDMH-001-HD-Motorsports-Hero/dp/B002VA57XC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1354840388&sr=8-2&keywords=go+pro+motorsports

GoPro has come out with a new Hero3 version.  Haven't seen one in person yet.  The main advantage is a remote control to start/stop recording.  With the Hero2, you have to stop and get out of the car to manually start/stop externally mounted cameras.  Of course, the Hero 3 will cost you more coin.

There may be a few of the original GoPro Hero versions for sale, but you don't want those.  The picture was much grainier and not full HD.  You want at least a Hero2 model.

Editor: the freebie Windows editor that came with Windows 7.  Upside is the price (free!) and a clean, uncomplicated user interface - probably because the feature set is a lot narrower than a full blown video editing package.  But it does have titles, captions, lots of transition choices, and some special effects.  You can add 1 layer of sound (typically the soundtrack) on top of the sound from the video file.  I bought a much more powerful video editing package (Camtasia) and lots more features, but is not nearly as easy to cut and paste clips together.  All those features come at a price in terms of ease of use.

I saw on the news a tornado passed thru a town in NZ.

Could that be Beck out ripping thru the country side making a new video.  :burnout:
