Black boxes in cars raise privacy concerns
« on: December 07, 2012 - 01:02:08 PM »

http://www.myfoxdc.com/story/20286045/black-boxes-in-cars-raise-privacy-concerns

I like to drive fast, but safe.  Here in Oklahoma the traffic is very light.  The posted speed limit is either 60 or 65 MPH around OK City itself. I generally cruise at 70 MPH; here again, no traffic.  Sometimes I'm the only vehicle on the road.

Anyway, the recorder, aside from accident investigations, will be used by insurance companies.
You know that GEICO "Snap Shop" device? Well, that exactly what it is used for.  You plug it into your car's computer and it tracks your driving habits.  GEICO wouldn't like me.  :roflsmiley:

So, anyone know where these recorders are and how to deactivate them?  :dunno:

They've been tracking us via our cell phones for years already.  I remember an old episode of chips where the dude stuffed and wrapped his car with foil thinking he could fool the radar lol.  Maybe try that ;)

Lots of cars on the road now have recorders that loop over 20 seconds or so. That way the cops can check the computer to see how fast you were going, when you hit the brakes etc. I don't think it can be disabled, but I can check parts of mine with my code reader.

After I graduated high school I worked at an auto shop where a guy would come in and freak out about the government "black box" being in his car.  He was a crazyyy man... literally, messed up in the head.  He came in every few weeks asking us to check his car for bugs thinking that the government was "listening" to him. We had to ask him to leave several times because he was literally scaring customers away!
One time he came in and begged us to check his car... we agreed to pull his car around back.  We had an old ECU laying around so we showed it to him after we pulled his car out of the bay... we told him we removed it form his car and that it was a spying device... lol  It was the funniest thing I've ever seen he was flipping sh**
I never saw him again!

Perhaps they can even find out how many miles you drove for the year after getting your smog check.
The technician enters in the milage. It goes into the state DMV records. So if you say you drive 10,000 miles a year, they can verify that is true or not.

Just a theory, but it makes sense.

I know they have considered using milage as an extra tax on hybrids/electric/alternate fuel vehicles.  The gasoline tax helps fund road repairs, the idea has always been the more you drive the more gas you use, the more wear you place on the roads so the more you should pay.  However with hybrids/electric/alternate fuels this is no longer true.

That new Progressive insurance "Snapshot" scares me to death.  You plug it into your car and it sends a random snapshot of what you are doing in your car at any given moment.  Speed limit, number of times you slam on your brakes, etc.  It even tells them at what time of the night you are driving.  This all in the name of lowering your car insurance.  I don't use Progressive but if this thing catches on, I will be in trouble!  LOL

"How often you slam on the brakes, how many miles you drive and how often you drive between midnight and 4 a.m. can all impact your potential savings."

Around here, say you just "cleared a code" before a smog test. Somehow they know it and tell you to drive around and come back in a few days.  :grinyes:

I do think this thing is way too "BIG Brother". Eventually they will be able to just shut you down remotely.   :nono:  But they cant shut NIKKI down (evil laff here)  :burnout:
